And finally I installed the bolts and pivots connecting the yokes to the steering clutch thrust bearings and got everything locked in place with new fold over locks.

I saw that in the manual too, but I pressed mine on at 10 which I think is sufficient for that tapered spline arrangement. I think that's a case where Cat's spec was too high. Time and operation will tell but I'm pretty confident I'm not going to have it come loose
Cheers,

Service manual says 15 ton for the clutch packs not not
Thanks Rome, appreciate you bringing that up. Its pretty well known by those that do steering clutches on D2's that the 15 tons book spec is way too high, in fact it's known that at 15 tons there's about a 50% chance that the hub will split in half! Toby goes into detail as to this in his videos and also pressed his hubs on to 9 tons (10 tons being the maximum). If Toby is about he might comment, also Eddie B, if he's around (haven't seen him for a long time tho!). The lower spec maximum came from him I believe.

Progress on the LH final today. All clean and the brake bands and linkages all in place. New CR seals and gasket on the bearing retainer/seal holder:
Pressing the drum on to 9 tons (same lesser spec as the clutch hubs on the bevel gear shaft)
And the retaining bolt all locked in place with a new cork gasket behind and corks in the adjacent holes (used for pulling the hub off the taper)

Another day of progress. Early this morning I slid the LH final into place with a new genuine CAT gasket:
Then I reassembled the RHS final:
And got it installed:

By the end of the day I had the steering clutches all adjusted and squared away:
I also adjusted the pinion latches while it was easy to access them - just half a turn on each side as I have been noticing it occasionally pops out before the diesel takes off. As far as I could see the cover had never been off! Still had yellow paint on the edge of the gasket.
And by the end of the day I had the finals all cleaned and the pivot shaft back in place:
