You could well be correct Neil. Just that I don't remember seeing much plastic on real working gear kind of stuff made before the 1970's. And knowing Cat changes things like the fuel bowl, make me suspect they changed other things.

Ray54 and Neil - I spoke too soon. What I found was a Donaldson precleaner with broken glass jar. I don't know whether it was mounted on D2-5J1555 at one point, or intended for a replacement. That machine has a similar precleaner on it currently, though I don't know whether it's original CAT or Donaldson, or etc.

Not relevant to this thread, but relevant to my lifestyle: I had noticed previously that the drawbar on 5J1555 was really beaten up. When we moved the D6 the other day, I found what looks like a used but decent shape D2 drawbar lying on the ground in a pile of junk. In any case, one of the first jobs for the D6 will be to drag 5J1555 out of its current nightmare of poison oak up to a clearing. And then I can start a new thread. :)

That is what was used on many Caterpillar machines. The replacement glass jar can be sourced from someone within the club, but kinda pricey. I have had some with the adapter ring to shim a standard Mason/Ball jar as well. Some will purchase the metal/plastic round body pre cleaner as well.
5J eh? This sounds like you have the collecting bug! Can't wait for that one too! JM

Been reading through a book that I recently purchased, “Selected Articles From Service Magazines 1932-1950”. It shows the Donaldson pre cleaner as recommended November 30, 1938. Has notation that recently plastic jar 5F6658 has been used but glass jar 5B2746 for earlier precleaners. Recommend round section rubber ring to hold jar more securely. Mike
