If I'm not mistaken, the undercarriage on that machine looks in good shape so that's one reason to retrieve it. I think I'd go out there again with the tools/parts knowing what you know now and get the pony going, and get the main clutch freed up and see if the main engine will turn. If it's in gear, you won't bar the main engine over although it would move a little I'd think. If it doesn't turn, you can always borescope it and see what's in the cylinders, and then fill them with a concoction of diesel, oil, and whatever else you'd like to dump in there, and put extra protection on the main exhaust. Where did you use your bar to try to turn the main engine?
If you decide to trailer it home, you'd probably want a heavy wrecker like you say in addition to the lowboy and plenty of snatch blocks, and a chainsaw to cut up some logs for rollers. Use the wrecker to lift each end and get the logs under there before dragging it on to the trailer. You could even make that the next trip instead of dicking with the engines

Cheers,
Neil

I'm gonna go ahead an buy it. It's worth a good bit in parts if I can't get it running.

Now the challenge of finding someone with big enough equipment to drag it out of the woods.

Something about this machine looks less abused than many old machines. Hopefully the engine is not all rust and junk. Beg, borrow, or whatever it takes to get a backhoe, skid steer, or bigger farm tractor and roll one track at time. Then rolled out of the hole it has sunk into. Big difference in rolling 15 ton compared to dragging it up on a truck.

Hi Ed, I agree with Neil, Ray and the others. The overall appearance of that D7 is very good. The bottom rollers can't be seen but if they have the same amount of wear as the rest of the U/C you'll be okay. I took the liberty of enlarging one of your pictures.

Thanks folks for the feedback!!

I found a local heavy haul and recovery company in Augusta, GA. It's is Reeves Wrecker Service. They are sending out someone to scout the situation today or tomorrow. If they can recover it, they'll drop it at my door.

Man, getting this thing moved is getting kind of complicated. Reeves Wrecker Service can recover the dozer, but they only have a Landoll trailer and for some reason are limited to 100 miles hauling. So, they suggested I talk to WH Reeves Co. (a cousin evidently) who specializes in lowboy hauling. WH Reeves Co. said they'd gladly haul the dozer but wanted me to make sure the dozer would roll freely as to not damage the decking on their lowboy. They suggested a reach out to George Snipes at Snipes Heavy Equipment Repair. They said he is an older gentleman who knows a lot about antique equipment and would be able to go out and see if the tracks are free. George said it would be at least next week (5/6/24) before he could get out to look at it.

The saga continues....

I’m sure it will roll just remember to loosen up the brakes as that usually is something you fight sitting for long periods of time.

Painfully slow but one 20 ton hydraulic jack will lift the blade and roll the tractor. A backhoe or a skid steer would be a lot less sweet, but harder on the wallet. As heavy as the blade looks I don't know if a come along will lift it. Maybe 2 with 2 people. Or the jack and bunch of blocks. Once the blade is chained up, put jack so you're lifting on a grouser on the back of the sprocket to start the rolling of tractor. Picture or at least written direction is the serviceman's book under removing steering clutches.

What is everyone's favorite concoction for freeing up stuck engines? Considering this one has been sitting for 30+ years, I assume it needs to have some serious penetrating power. I really would like to avoid doing a full tear down.
