@Old Magnet
I assume installing a new magento isn't just plug and play? I bought a shop manual and it says piston one on the pony needs to be at the "spark' timing mark and the magneto needs to be at the timing mark as well. Does that sound correct?

Yes, mag timing needs to be matched to the engine. Here's the instructions for the Eisemann mag....

Can you all confirm that one or both of the below kits will work for the carb?

Something that can be done on the older starting engines, to avoid doing a carb rebuild in the field, is fitting a Stromberg carb in place of the original down swept carb. In my part of the world these are readily available and you can have it on hand in working order prior to heading out to get a tractor running in a remote location. It can save some time and eliminate some of the unknown variables that you are likely to encounter. They have the added bonus of having a throttle pump, which can help immensely on first starts.

Neil,
Yes, exactly, 173,186, 202, etc. The single barrel carb that was used on the inline 6 cylinder Holden bolts onto the intake flange without any modifications, and can be a really simple solution to carb problems in the field. I personally don't like to disassemble anything in the field with parts smaller than my first if I can avoid it, the pieces can be too hard to find when I drop them 😅. It's not accurate for restoration purposes, but works well for getting something running and mobile.

It can be a simple 2 bolt, 1 fitting, and governer linkage change rather than a complete carb clean and rebuild in less than ideal conditions sometimes, especially if time is a factor. I also know how dropping a small part and not being able to find it again can ruin your day.

That's really good information thanks for that. I do have spare known-to-work mags and carbs for this purpose although it didn't occur to me to use off-brand for the carb. I wonder what the equivalent to the Stromberg is in the US. The Holden engine is an adaption of the Chev six cylinder as I understand it so the Yanks probably have something similar with a modern replacement
Cheers,

@D8Dude
Is there a specific model of Stromberg carb? I see lots available online for a wide range of prices.
Edit - scratch that...I just saw your follow up post.
