A couple interesting farm Cats

Now that's sneakin up on it through the weeds and the fog. That was a really neat introduction, just like I wandered around snooping and just found it!

It sounds really good, but then every 9U always sounds really good. Just like a Cat should.

I love the alternator overrun belt setup. You want to be careful when that turbo kicks in and your engine takes off that you don't overspeed the alternator. The belt will act as an overrun clutch so the alternator won't blow up your batteries. Lots of extra sheaves there for other power needs, too. Never know when you'll need to mount up a welder, lathe, mill, maybe a gas generator.

I also found the hydraulic setup interesting. I don't think I've seen one like that, all self contained on the rear case power port. I see the remote cables for the two valves and the supply hose. The tank must be up on the fender or under the seat?

Very interesting. Nice result, too.

Your luck is better than mine. When those wasp nests shoot out of the stack for me, the biggest one usually manages to land on my head . . . and be full of twenty angry wasps.

You wouldn't think a guy my size and shape could move as fast as I can, but I've surprised a few people.

Thanks for the neat video.

Pete.

BP: isn't it a great feeling to bring a dead tractor back to life? Love it! I give my DE start a whiff of ether too; not a fan of it either. I did read the label on "Johnson's" starting fluid; it consists of propane and some other ingredients, so I started using it instead when possible. Don't know if it makes any difference or not. I'm assuming it's less harmful on the motor?
Are "dumpster ducks" what we know as seagulls? We are over a hundred miles from the ocean, yet they will pop out of no where when we used to work ground in the fall. My brother was pretty handy with his 870 Remington. Used to disk and blast those nasty winged birds along with crows too. Drove pretty straight while doing it I might add!

Thanks Pete, I thought the intro was kinda neat. The pump for the Hydraulics is in the front driven off the crankshaft and hidden. The tank is where the starting engine was, and the valves are in the back. Pretty slick setup really. The control cables are stuck so I haven't tried the hydraulics yet but there is oil in the tank. Over all I'm pretty pleased, It's nice to have a 9U again.

Juiceman, yes it's terrific to coax one to life after such a long nap. Here, our dumpster ducks are ravens and crows, absoultely filthy disgusting birds. I have a old single shot Stevens .410 that my great uncle carried on the Cat with him while he was plowing to shoot them off the tractor.

Looks pretty good to me Bruce. If you park it next to your shed, you could fit it with a block heater for easy starting too.

Cheers,
Neil

Thanks Neil, block heater would probably work good. I am curious if it will start without help in the summer. Time will tell.

hi bruce,

i like your old 9u, One of my 9u's had an intermittent miss and pop on number 3 cyllinder, it turned out to be bent push rod, i figured it had been ether-bunnied and bent the push rod. once i replaced it, it ran good and strong.

I had an 8U with the same issue. Had an occasional pop/miss/sputter. Broken rocker arm? Anyways, tractor ran WAY better after repaired.
Bruce: that's some "chunky" smoke! We started having mud dauber and paper wasp problems here 20 years ago. Still buy bug spray by the case, as they love to nest in every nook and cranny.
You know we are all expecting an action video of the old girl purring away with an implement in tow!

Copy that, I’m anxious to stretch it’s legs too! I checked the valves first thing to make sure there wasn’t a stuck one. Now that it’s home, after I get a few “non toy” projects finished up I can bring it in for a complete service and fix some things.

I’m afraid our farming window might be shut for the year so it may be spring before we can see how it works. We’ll pull the Harris with it next summer for sure.

Also brake kleen makes pretty good bug spray in a pinch.
