Hi, Walt 3TD7.
Twould seem you may be in need ovva bit ovva a geography lesson, M8. There are 'ackshully' FOUR DowNundas, with 2 of them closer to Mary Ann's old haunts than the DowNunda where I live. As well as the DowNunda where I live, Australia, there's also South America, Seff Efrica and the Great White South Land itself.

Then you could also add in those couple of lumps of wrinkly rock just across the Tasman Sea from where I live that seem to be a 'suburb' of OUR DowNunda 'cos most of the 'locals' from there seem to be more local on the Western side of said Tasman Sea these days. Some folks, mostly those born there, seem to want to glorify said lumps of rock as a country on its own named New Zealand, but seems few of them want to 'ackshully LIVE in said country. I can understand that. If the joint ain't trying ter freeze yer to death in the South Island, it's tryin' ter fry yer or boil yer amongst the volcanoes and boiling hot springs and pools on the Mainland. LOL.

'Nuff geography for today. I don't want to overwhelm yer. 'Sides, I might ruffle some kiwi feathers. LOL.

Just my 0.02.

Hi, D2mova.
Yeah, but . . . . . . . . . . . . . yer start 3 X D2s at once and try to turn one of 'em around and the other two hafta git out in the ocean ter make room fer him to make his turn. LOL. Start a D9 and the whole joint rumbles and shakes. Come ter think uv it, the whole joint rumbles and shakes anyway, even without a D9 running. LOL.

Yer right, M8. By all I have been told, yer homeland izza beautiful place and I have been there 4 times - - - - stopovers in Auckland (That's on the mainland, isn't it?) both ways on my first 2 trips to the U.S. with Air N.Z.. I was AMAZED. The lights were still on and there were people there.

That said and fun over, I would like to see more of your fair homeland someday soon and maybe meet a few Kiwi collectors. Thanks for being a part of the 4um.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Folks,

I've been thinking about this "Best of the West Show." From things I'm hearing, it's gonna be a once in a Lifetime Show. I got confirmation from Duane Doyle that he will fly in some of his planes. I asked that he bring his P-51 Mustang, "Red Dog." If it happens, it's a way Cool Plane...:eyebrows:... WOW, the Best's, Holt's, Planes, Trains, Horse and Mule Teams, Cats, Antique Trucks, Army Vehicles, Tanks, and of coarse Special Guest Star Attraction, "The Garlic Clan." MaryAnn along side other Antartic Vehicle/Tractors, and actual hands on people to tell the way it happened. The Siamese Twin D8 on display with Phil, one of the team that put it together, with Duane Doyle, Ed Akin, and I. Duane's DD9g on display and working the Sand Box. Jesse Gilbertson said it's a go with his North West 80. Not sure yet but he might set it up as a Shovel Front. That will be exciting to watch load, Cat 769 and 773 haul trucks, along with a Euclid 49fd model. Other smaller cranes will be working too( one freshly out of paint shop). Many, many Cats and tractors running in a Giant Sand Box... We will have viewing areas for two demonstration areas... One for Big Iron, one for smaller equipment to work safely. I'm excited about the Antique Truck Collection that is going to be there and is growing this year. I haven't been to every show around, but have been and traveled to a few here and there and can vouge for it's name, "The Best of the West Show.":biggrin1:

Glen,
Which LGP D8 is in your last picture? If that is Mary Ann, then is that the blade that went into the crevasse with Linda? Never saw that one before.

I see a problem coming up. I don't think I can do all that I want by attending this show for just three days! Even coming on the Monday prior (my present plan) may not be enough time!!!!! This will be absolutely OUTSTANDING!

Thanks for posting and all you efforts to make this happen!

Hey Jan,

Want a recovery mission? Maybe we should go to that crevasse and pull Linda back up! Wow- would that be a recovery:smow::smow::smow:... Yes, that picture was given to me by Tracy Shane, "MaryAnn Operator 1987-88." At that time MaryAnn had the big dozer blade of the fleet. If you look at the pictures from "The Demise of Linda," Pam at that time had a standard SD8-LGP dozer blade on her. For some reason MaryAnn couldn't make the trip, so they put MaryAnn's blade on Linda. As you know now, Linda went down with that blade and is "Frozen in Time," :smow::smow::smow:... So... they then needed a Big Dozer Blade, that's when they got the Balderson set up and put it on PAM. Then...when shipping Collen back to its new home(or Birth Place) the driver did not understand the color coding of parts in the pile of dozer blades, struts, and push arms. They grabbed Pams blade(minus one cross strut) and shipped it with Colleen.... History huh?

I agree that 3 days isn't gonna be enough time. I hear rumor that OldIronHabit wants to start watering his thirst down a couple of days early 🍺 Hahaha

Hey Jan,

I just got off the phone with Russ Magsig, the mechanic go to guy of the SD8-LGP's. Russ got many of them back to life. Very knowledgeable guy. We talked for 30 minutes or so. I invited him to come tell stories at The Show. Great Guy...he is hoping to be there.

Hey all. On the road today heading to California with the first load of completed projects that will be at the show! Many more loads to follow.

This load sure is pulling way easier than the #60 elevating grader last year!!

Tom, Glen's post got me thinking (I know....) that maybe we could have some after-banquet presentations or even just remembrances from some of these folks on history with some of this gear, or lunch-time (after the noon ceremony) presentations. I'd be happy to help out with that if it materializes one day.

Cheers,
Neil

Hi, Wyocat.
Seems ter me, I've seen that engine B4, settin' on that carriage on the same showground that it is headed to now - back in 2010. I even have some photos ter prove it. I know the make. Let's see how other people's memories are or maybe their knowledge of old engines.

Neat load of barn-fresh old gear. Thanks for sharing.

Neil,

The story of the Stretch D8s will be a part of the banquet proceedings but the details are still being worked out. They depend on who shows up and how best to work them into the presentations. We have a new member of Chapter 16 who was down on the ice over 4 summers starting in 1979 who is our current resource. There are other things being talked about but we definitely have the D8 LGPs and the Antarctic Story being showcased this year. Come ready to learn and hear some fantastic stories. You think that big snowstorm outside your window right now is a big deal, wait to hear what it is like to weld steel at 40 degrees F below!

JanM

PS - I like to watch the weather forecasts of your snow and cold when we had 80 degree daytime temps today. I do remember my days living in the Empire State! Brrr! :)
