So I was talking to an old friend today that owned the Cat/John Deere dealership in Pomeroy,Wa. He told me that all the D5Bs they sold in the day (they were popular in his area) were turboed, he thought that you had to special order one without a turbo which they never did. According to him, they would set them at 178 hp, they gave no trouble at that setting. The max was 225 hp anything over that and they would wear through the hard surface in the final drive gears.
That's what he told me and I believe him, don't shoot the messenger...

OK well the two oldest Kiddo's and I went for a quest in the attic after school, they were getting cold and I was about to give up when I found the sale sheet.
Serial 70X0118, Eng #12Z05268, 4V6546 low gears
$41,182.85 paid in full Dec 2nd, 1985
If the old SOB is still around I wouldn't mind finding it.

41 grand would have been a fair bit of coin in 1985 and would have been a bucket load more in Australia in December 85
Your lucky to have these records Bruce my Dad chucked everything away years ago
By the sounds of the problem with oil heating like it did it sounds like it was pumping thru the relief valve its the only thing I know of that heats oil quick and to the sort of temperature you describe good luck with the hunt for the old Crawler
I noticed it had longer track frames and extra rollers in your photos have never seen one like that before we never took many photos of going on's around the farm but the advent of camera phones and the likes has changed all that

Yeah, I'm sure $41 large was a hellish amount of money for them. Mom was pretty handy with the Kodak back in the day, but as far as know there are only three pictures of it.
Don't get me wrong about finding it. It would be interesting to know where it's at and find out if it ever got fixed but that would be enough. Dad's poltergeist would kick me squarely in the groin if I drug it back up here. Lol. It did ride nice with that extra roller though.

would you guys go with direct injection model or one with glow plugs I live in Illinois.
this would be used for a scraper and rome disc. but really I don't know what size to put behind it.
there is a youtube video of a d6c pulling cat 60 maybe its not a sa model looks nice, but also seams to me that its all that crawler wants, could have been the material.
I have a 5000 to 6000 lb 5 yard big dog scraper out on demo. but have not had the chance to try it with a high 180 hp d5sa im going to look at the crawlers in a few days.

Hi, Fiat41B.
There are still some of those Cat 60 scraper being pulled by Cat D6 8U and 9U tractors - which are fair bit less HP and weight than a D6C - and they do it well.
Admittedly, they had a 14A D8 push-loading in this video but I have used that same combo several times in the past at various shows and a play day and it works very nicely by itself too. AND, it doesn't have anything like the HP of the D5B you are talking about.
Just my 0.02.
You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Considering the hp's that were being pushed through single reduction final drives I would suspect steering clutch slippage as the major source of over heating. Fluid flow would normally be a fairly consistent function with some heat rise from the friction of working surfaces.

HERE IS THAT VIDEO OF THE D6C PULLING A CAT 60
Im thinking cat 60 if the d5b sa would handle one?
I was talking to a guy that does conversions he told me of a customer that he did one for and that customer is wanting to sell his it has newer hydraulics sequencing valve. side boards.
He also suggested a AC 108 he said they load the best and handle the best for not tipping over
he could build me one he said he is thinking about how to get 23.5 x 25 to fit on the rear
Check out his scrapers stevevoightman.org the 60 in the pic is the one Im looking at check out his A/C 108's.
Here is video of that guy on cat d6c pulling 60 pan powershift tranny.
