Bruce I too have always enjoyed the SA tractors mostly the D4e SAs. I have owned both D4Ds ,5 roller frame 70" gauge , 24" pads and turboed 84Js and 5 roller frame 20" pads and non turboed D4D SAs. I use D4E SAs for cutting fire breaks, you can't beat them for steep hillside work. All are turboed,6 roller frames 70" gauge with 24" pads also equipped with factory Cat cabs. Over the years a have kept a log of all the D4E SAs I have ran across or seen for sale logging there location, serial number ,owner and sale price.

I knew of a few D7s that were called Super 7s; were those basically a variable horsepower machine or different animal? My rice farmer buddies kinda groaned about them because they said they consumed over 20 gallons of diesel per hour and would tear the guts out of them because of too much power......

Hi, MrsMP.
The first series of D5 built to replace the D6B had the flat HOOD. (Yer gotta call 'em a 'hood' or these 'topsiders' are left scratching their heads, getting millions of splinters and still wund'rin' wotchyer talkin' about. LOL.) The D5B had the sloping hood.

Hi, Juiceman.
Dunno if yer talking about the same thing but the last of the D7Es released down here had some of them up-rated to 200 HP. I have only seen a couple of them and have been told that they did suck a LOTTT of 'liquid hay'. Azfer bustin' things, I dunno - didn't see enough of them.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

The only SA tractor I had was a D8L SA, didn't have it all that long, it came out of Modesto area. Current owner has converted it to torque converter drive, I don't know why??????. Did a lot of deep ripping with a standard D8L, man it loved fuel, averaged 72 liters per hour in 2nd gear, would start the pull in 1st, then flip into 2nd, would falter for a short period, then start to run, bellowed like a bull, gave me goose bumps.

As for the D5B sloping bonnets, my power shift D5B direct injection was a sloping bonnet, I think the earlier tractors had the flat bonnet or maybe the factory where they came from might have influenced same.

From what I can gather, only the D4E (29X), D5B (26X), D6D (5X) are VHP option. The D7G (35N)(250 hp) and D8L (4FB)(400 hp) are straight high hp machines.
For some strange reason the D5 SA's and D5B SA's are the only ones where correct turbo and hp ratings are not readily identified or match the literature. Still digging.

Sloped hood is not an indicator for turbo. I have the parts manual for the D5B 24X413-up. It has the sloped hood but is non turbo.

The d5b has exhaust and air cleaner on right hand side of engine. The d6d has exhaust with turbo on right hand side of engine with the air cleaner and housing being on the left hand side of the engine to make room for turbo. If you look at the hoods its easy see the difference in the two tractors. Can you see this difference in the sa models of the d5b with or without turbo?

Like I am implying, I think my D5 is kind off an oddball unit. It does have FLAT hood which is correct, as sloped hoods didn't come out until the D5 B series; called the guys using the tractor and they confirmed that mine (#492) has a 3306 and is turbocharged.....that was the main reason why I had purchased it.
Gary: Thanks for the pics of the 7; that's a nice one. So was it an F series bumped up?
