Sorry about the SAMPLE wording, this comes from the file converter program that I use to convert PDF to JPEG.

Somewhere, I also have a newspaper clipping from when Holt Equipment at Weslaco, TX introduced the D6 SA in a field demonstration at Krenmueller Farms, south of Alamo, along Highway 281

OM,,The D4E 70X SA were also VHP tractors. Two of my D4s are VHPs which were the last ones built for the U.S. Due to emissions. Two of mine are 1985s, towards the endproduction the dealer had to order 5 at a time. I was going to order two but by time the dealer had orders for the 5, the D4E SA was no longer available, The D4E. SR was now available,it was available with a 6 roller frame bought not 70 " gauge and not with a factory Cat cab so I didn't them , I just keep rebuilding the ones I have now. They are a great tractor

Like I am implying, I think my D5 is kind off an oddball unit. It does have FLAT hood which is correct, as sloped hoods didn't come out until the D5 B series; called the guys using the tractor and they confirmed that mine (#492) has a 3306 and is turbocharged.....that was the main reason why I had purchased it.
Gary: Thanks for the pics of the 7; that's a nice one. So was it an F series bumped up?

If your #492 has a 3306 the engine has been changed. #492 is a 1969 machine and the 3306 didn't come out until 1972. I can pretty much verify this comparing to the 93J which was a D333C until s/n #732 (in 1972) when it also changed to 3306. Check your parts book if you have one.

The VHP tractors are real hot rods , they use a lot fuel than the standard 29 x
, you can only work 6. To 7 hours on a hard pull without fueling, I don't know Cat would put a smaller fuel tank on a tractor that uses more fuel other than it was an option the original buyer chose.

Was there an option on fuel tank size or was it a case of using the standard tank even though the consumption was higher?

Thanks OM, that puts me a little bit at ease; I have been mystified by that tractor since day one......
You and the rest are a wealth of knowledge and extremely helpful as well as patient. I will investigate further, not doubting you or anyone else, but just to double confirm #s match etc. I just ordered some books for this unit and will do some serious homework! Thanks again, Juiceman.

Note the 98J1-1133 Parts Book change that reflects the engine change.

Bruce I too have always enjoyed the SA tractors mostly the D4e SAs. I have owned both D4Ds ,5 roller frame 70" gauge , 24" pads and turboed 84Js and 5 roller frame 20" pads and non turboed D4D SAs. I use D4E SAs for cutting fire breaks, you can't beat them for steep hillside work. All are turboed,6 roller frames 70" gauge with 24" pads also equipped with factory Cat cabs. Over the years a have kept a log of all the D4E SAs I have ran across or seen for sale logging there location, serial number ,owner and sale price.[/QUOTE

Dad bought a 70x new in '85, I don't think Dad slept till it got here. I was six at the time, came home from school to find the new Cat in the shed. Unfortunately our experience with the D4E was less than stellar. It was Dads only brand new Cat and it was very disappointing for him. It ended up California I'm told, I've looked for some records that would tell the SN but I haven't found any.

I'm in the process of downloading and resizing the rest of my SA stuff so I should have more to look at tomorrow.

Bruce

These are about the only photos we have of our D4E Dad was running it off the lowboy for the first time.

There are two different ones here, earlier and later I believe.
