Hi, 83Jim.
I hafta DIS-agree with your comment about the TD18 still being 'new', M8. More correctly, it was in 'used' condition - - - - - - with the letters, 'AB' in front the 'used'.
I'da liked to have seen it sailing 'gracefully through the air with wings unspread' though. Pity nobody got it on video.
Just my 0.02.
You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Me too! Can you imagine what it would be like now if the old operators back in the day could've worn GoPro cameras like people do these days, YouTube would be so full of cool stuff to see that none of us would ever get anything done.

Sas,
Other than the fuzzy view generated by quick exit off the machine, a GoPro would probably only show a close-up of the bark of the log under which the crew landed as the 18 made it's pass overhead!
I hope you folks up north are staying warm! You've got to have a lot of COLD, YELLOW IRON up there these days.

No Mosquitos. There is some good in this cold. Was cool at -17 this morning but up to +8 this afternoon. Be in the twenties by Thursday. I to am waiting to see what the damage was to the originL posters machine.

I got real busy after the New Year with family stuff and work. I have not had a chance to get back to the D7. It is still sitting level on the root ball chained to the backhoe. Oh, and my son un-beaded the front backhoe tire in the mud while digging out the D7.
Thanks for all the stories. Love 'em.
Yeah, we are rookies at this stuff, but I hardly ever hire-out a job for anything. I never walked away from a challenge, and I love learning new skills and teaching my kids the same. I do have great respect for the machines and the trees. I have many stories myself of close calls while working in the woods. Coincidentally, about 30 feet from where this occurred, I almost lost my left arm 8 years ago to the week when I slammed into a tree with my Suburban. I was out in the rain with my son (the same one) to do some burn piles. I got bit sideways trying to get up the hill and stuck the Suburban. After some effort, I got it pointed in a good direction and got it moving. As I drove past a tree I looked back to the left to make sure the tree did not hit the side of the truck. When I looked forward, another tree was coming straight at me. I "instinctively" put my hand out to push off the tree (yea, I know... what the hell was I thinking). The truck slammed into the tree with my arm was between the truck and tree. At that point the momentum of the truck continued forward, and my arm stayed with the tree. As I was being pulled out the window, I was able to whack the gear selector into reverse, which freed my arm. I had to leave the Suburban stuck against the tree for 4 weeks before recovering it.

I'm in Bakersfield. If you need help dragging the 3T back to the shop I can bring up my D7 and help you out. Just pay my fuel bill, truck gets about 5.5-6 mpg. Mike 661-331-2996

Hey Dcrobira,
Heck, if you want help, let me know. I have been looking for an excuse to get away for a little bit. I need a break from attorney's, cpa's, and authorities with red tape. If you want me to load up my 14-a and pull your Cat to the shop, just let me know. I'm 2-3 hours from you. Don't worry about the fuel, I'd be glad to help. glen
