I believe the pinion clutch lever if held in the opposite direction of engagement actually brakes the clutch discs. also changing the clutch oil out and filling with ATF oil helps with the braking. seems the pinion latches need tightening so they don't disengage too early.

Ya I know about the clutch break I will try switching the oil out and see if that helps how would a go about making the adjustment. Do I need to pull the starting pinion to do it?

not sure about a D6--on a D2 and D4 there is an access plate over the pinion latch mechanism to get in and adjust the latches--someone will jump in here that knows.

Pete--do you have something on the latch adjustment? I think that's what Stevens was inquiring about.

Here is the adjustment procedure.
More often than not problems are due to wrong assembly or loose pinion sleeve or worn engagement latches.
Access is the square hole plug seen way to the right behind the engagement lever rod.
Do not allow pony to exceed 3350 rpm.

thanks guys and thank you old magnet for the pic and procedure on how to do it. hopefully I can get that solved by this weekend before the weather changes. Thank you dpendzic Changing to atf solved the grinding problem instantly!!!!! not to mention the oil was milky more water then oil

still gonna have to do a latch adjustment will kick out when you take the compression release off and try to start so think it will be best to pull the whole pinion like the procedure old magnet posted to check the whole thing over. Thanks guys Stevens

Hey 7Mile,
"I'll take a little dust control over cable sliver's and rat's nest's lol."
The trick is to learn how not to make a Rat's Nest. You admitted that your "Young", maybe you'll learn, but some people choose cable rigs just for The Historical Nostagial Factor about it. Oh I own hydraulic rigs, and use those too, but when it's time to enjoy myself, I choose to run my cable stuff. I simply enjoy them. There is something about getting back into the history of it all. I think of how many miles and miles of highways that were built by cable set ups. How many cubic yards of dirt moved. It's amazing when you think about it. Some choose to laugh, they may not have it figured out, but don't look down at others because they choose to enjoy themselves. I think it's a nice '51 model. glen
