Keep up the good work and do not think for a minute I am picking on your seat. This is a part of the learning curve of life--sometimes it can get very steep :-)
Thanks and keep it coming and we will see if we can respectfully help you along to get the best result.
Regards,
Eddie B.

Hi Eddie - Actually I can really appreciate constructive criticism so a particular thank you to you and the guys for sending me some tweak requests! :) I can tell you've been following along so it appears safe to say you've noticed that I'm trying to make this as accurate as possible. Sadly I only have a side view so the pan is tough to see. I'll use your photos as the view-from-above templates along with the side view shot of the Twenty and see if I can't make this thing more accurate. Thanks again!

Replied by edb on topic Cast Iron Implement Seats
Hi Calvin,
you were behind the Eight Ball there trying to replicate the seat from the view you show above.
I used Google to find Images of Cast Iron Implement Seats and came up with those two plus more on the Net.
As I am Downunder in Australia my search came up with local variants so you would surely get some local to you up there in USA.
Keep the pix comiing, I am entirely taken in by this new technology and its uses for such as you are doing.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Thanks fellas! Lots of pictures to come...only after I complete the seat design. As you may imagine, the slight curvatures of the pan along with cooling hole dimensions make this a rather difficult design. :smash:

I should have an update on the new seat in the next day or so. :)

Wednesday update: Seems I can pick from hundreds of seat designs. I also learned through a contact that the seat on that Twenty may not have been the factory shipped seat but rather one that just worked for the owner. I have to take into consideration the limitations of printing with my choice. There were some very intricate designs that caught my eye but I doubt they'll print properly. Now, there are two ways to print an object: 1) it has to have a flat bottom and I can print it fine on my machine or 2) it doesn't have a flat bottom and it is printed with support. With the example of the below seat, the bottom is no where near flat so the 3D printing software has to calculate how much support material to add under the part to make it flush to the print bed. The problem with #2 here is that all of that material has to be removed. With a part this small, I'm afraid that I'd have to sacrifice accuracy for printability and that concept is one I wrestle with frequently. But there's an alternative...a company called Fineline Prototyping will take my digital file and print the part for me. As technology changes, so do the methods for rapid prototyping and to be honest I can't keep up with them all. I believe they still print just like I do, only using very intricate and very expensive 3D printers with micro imaging capabilities.

There's a #3 in here as well and one that I've resorted to in the past: I could add my own support via my 3D design software. This option can be tricky, but it's less messy than letting the printing software make the support for me and faster than #2. Sometimes I have to add support or take away support to make the print a functional and clean part.
I was hoping to be farther along at this point, but I have a day job that takes me away from play time.

Hi Calvin,
really like the look of the new seat. I think anyone disputing that one would be told to come up with a better alternative themselves.
Most would not know any difference.
As we do not know what the original looked like, run with what ya got, until, a pic of an original comes to light.
Great work.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

PS only thing that comes to mind is that the Hyster Double Drum Donkey Winch, scan below, had a seat attachment that allowed the operator to sit facing the rear to operate the high lead wires etc.

Thanks Eddie! I do too! :)

I spent a few hours last night carefully taking all of the unique components of the crawler apart, stripping the tracks of factory paint then soda-blasting them clean and assembling the new winch parts to the chassis. You might notice that some printed parts are no longer black but rather a tan. I ran out of black filament. :rolleyes2: I like the tan better anyway...it is the closest color to the weathering products so it's easier to mask. Next up, all of the pieces will be primed and then the fun begins!

This is going to be a long weekend!

the pan seat is looking perfect now!!!
are you going to make also controles of the winch?

and i am curious how the model will look like in the used / weathering style, i like it very much !! mabe i will buy some models in this style!! are you going to sell the winch apart ?? or only sell complete cat 20 with winch in weathered style?? also in new style it would be a superb extra on this model!

if you sell i will think about buying and adding the winch!! i see a new hobby coming up for me , after 4 tractors scale 1:1 ( TEN and 3 FIFTEENS mabe i turn to a scale tractor)

there are also tractors with a running engine build on scale , i dont know the scale but it must be 1:5 i think , its on you-tube( i remember a caterpillar sixty with small running engine).

if you want to see a lot of tools on a tractor there are several books like :
- Caterpillar: ten archive, thirty archive and sixty archive and some more.

beautyfull picture of a winch on this post:

Glad I'm getting lots of thumbs up on the seat! That design was a killer. I think I have 6 seats designed. :eek2:

Honestly yes if anyone were interested I'd print and finish the winch for them. Sure, why not. :) I print in the absolute finest layers (.1mm layer height and .22mm layer width) so it takes about 24 hours to get the parts printed. I'm really here to share the technology and show how these beautiful crawler models can be artistically altered to give them "life" as they deserve but if I can spice up some users' model collection as well I'm game. On that note, and since you're interested in the weathering, keep your eyes on this thread because in the next 48 hours you'll see a completed model. It'll even have a few additional "things" that will make it pop. I know, I know...suspense!

Here's a teaser: when you hold any of the models and give them a close inspection all items that should be cast are smooth. That drives me bonkers. So we have to go over the pieces to make the alterations. For instance, the tracks. It's starting to come alive!

I've done so much research on the Twenty I don't even know where to start on the Twenty Two; I'm not sure which implements were/are available. Good thing a few people here know a thing or two about old Cats huh?

Any advice would be much appreciated...along with pictures. Thank you!
