Hey Erik, too bad they didn't make a truck engine with a pony motor! If you don't find a Cat, how about a JT6 or 220 Cummins.

Hi Eric,
a quick glance thru my Rack Setting Book and without looking too deep into things I would expect that the D468 is a variation of the DW10 engine which are derived from the D4600 as fitted to the D6, No12 grader etc. machines of the day.

The D468 Serial Numbered 1N3001-up has a special Automotive governor that is P/No 6B5423 as does the 1N2001-up and 6V5001-up DW10.
The DW10 engine would have a sump, clutch and air compressor also and go a long way to getting the flywheel and flywheel housing etc. needed for a conversion to an On-highway truck gearbox and application.
Some food for thought if you want to go with the early style engine.

Maybe a later D318 DW10 engine could be considered also if you want to go with nostalgic engines.
At 1900 High Idle and 1770 Full Load of 100Hp they would be slow on the road.
Not so much so if compared to our 1929 5 ton tandem drive English Thornycroft Truck that was flat at 30MPH and 2-3 MPG. I re-powered it with a 1932 5LW Gardner 5 cyl diesel engine that was 1770 HI and 1700 FL --we went to 12 MPG loaded and 17 un-loaded but still 30 MPH :-)))

Still later is the early 1673 at around 2400 HI and 2200 FL. and 220 Hp.
All depends on what you are doing with the unit--the DW10 engine would be cool.

Good luck with what ever you go with and we all expect to see the conversion unfold as it progresses.

Cheers,
Eddie B.

I have never seen one but a guy I worked with that worked for a cat dealer told me that cat did make a D318 truck engine. he told me it had a different exhaust manifold for the turbo, a different manifold than the 14 motor grader used.

Late summer of 1959 at Crook's Bros in Reno/Sparks, NV I picked up some literature touting the NEW Cat diesel truck engine. 1673 (I think) or maybe its predecessor.

Erik, I just wanted to share some thoughts that came to me over the years at truck shows from the old timers. Most of the tractor engines that were placed in trucks developed crank shaft issues from the higher engine speeds and varied speeds of shifting gears especially downshifting on hills. This is why most of the early engines are not around. Most tractor companies tried to put their engines on the road with little success until they were redesigned. For limited use I have seen some antiques re-powered with tractor engines but the owners have commented that they would not be pleasant to drive on the road. As for a pony start there are pictures of Mack trucks from 30's with D-4 engines hauling logs in the mountains, and I have seen one recreated.

thanks for your input mike.
this truck would only be for toying around, as i have larger trucks to do any hauling if need be.

To me the D468 engine would be a good project if another engine could be converted. I think altering the governor for use in a truck would be the hard part. Motor mounts and bell housing adaptors are not hard with a little creativity and a decent machinist.

According to James K. Wagner in his book Ford Trucks Since 1905 Ford did not offer any diesel engines that year for any of its trucks. It looks like though if you wanted to keep it original an F700 would have had a 272 HD (heavy duty) V8. That was also the first year for the Transmatic automatic tranny made by GM. I saw an F750 with a 3208 stuffed in it and the owner had rigged the hood and fenders to open like a modern truck would instead of just the hood opening like a pickup truck. Not much extra room in those old dogs and they are just like working on cat crawler loaders upside down and cussing them till the bitter end. Just my two Abe Lincoln's.
