Replied by EAS on topic Orchard Removal

How come you are tearing up an orchard that was planted as late as 1995? I thought orchards lasted for decades.

The block removed was an almond orchard. Almonds reach the end of their economic life around 20 years. This block had also suffered from wind damage. About every ten years we have sever wind storms out of the south that take its toll on our almond orchards in Northern California. Almond trees are very susceptible to wind damage due to their root structure. In 2006 we had winds in the area that reached 100 mph gusts out of the south. At that time we lost approximately 30% of the trees in that block. In the Mid 90's we had a storm come through with similar winds. In one block that year we lost 60% of the trees. This orchard was past its prime. Walnuts stay in much longer, some of our blocks were planted in the 1960's.

EAS, the cab on that D6B looks like a twin to the one my cousin has on his 84J D4. My cousins cab was built by Harold Electric in Walla Walla, Wa.

When Dad traded our lemon D4E off, it ended up in an orchard in California somewhere. I've been looking through some old bookwork to try and find the SN to post, but have not been successful.

Bruce, The cab is a Harold Electric. We had to replace the ac and get some seals for another crawler, which Harold Electric supplied. Good guys to work with. The build a nice cab.

Yea my cousins is pretty good. Harold also used to make really cool floor mats. They had leather boots for the levers and pedals to keep the dust out, I don't think they offer those anymore.

I've been looking at this thread and have noted that some of the implements have steel wheels. Does anyone know when steel wheels stopped being used on implements?

Durango, most everything we would pull has been on rubber since the seventy's with the exception of rod weeders, you can still buy brand new rod weeders with steel wheels. There is a set sitting at Pape in Colfax, Wa. Reason being the guys where those are still being used have pretty big places, and weeders are a pain to break down and move. So they'll leave a set here and there and just move the tractor, since they're not on the road there's no need for rubber plus they won't ever go flat.

Looks like it's pretty wet where you're disking.

That's the way we used to do it, some hitches had 3 drills.

Now they use some big heavy machine that applies fertilizer, seeds, and I don't know what all in one pass!:dizzy:

And of course with a cab!
