For those reading, I've learned a lot already. I do, indeed, have the buzz-bomb set up. Word has it that is has been pull/pop started for years. We will try that this afternoon, although it's been at least 5 to 10 years since it's run.

Thank you. I think there are multiple choices as to where to source a direct drive starter, do you have a recommendation?

I'm not that up on sourcing a starter ready to go. You can use a Delco 40MT, 42MT or 50MT clockwise 12 or 24v starter but the hard and important part is finding the Cat #1M0023 offset adapter. This is required because the hole where the starter goes is larger for the "buzz bomb".
A local starter shop may be able to help you out.

Hopefully I can find that adapter. Maybe someone reading will know of one. Thanks for all the knowledge.

You guys are great. Awesome research. I always feel parts like this are probably within a ten mile radius in the weeds, we just don't know where. No idea what it looks like yet, but I have a great machinest...

I'll ask my buddy if he still has access to a D6B and whether it's being parted out. It is direct electric start and has the starter (and other parts) that you'd want. It may have already headed to Caterpillar's foundry....
Update - already gone
