Does TRW still have parts for this old stuff. I put one of their kits in about 1990 in a 9u. Started to pull the transmission over 10 years ago, and another tractor went down I need sooner. Then 9u's almost feel from the sky, and just never got back to it.

From my parts gathering quest with this machine, all I could find anywhere for liner kits was CTP. I’d have gone for a more well-known name brand if it was available. But, Dana at Florin sold a lot of CTP parts if he didn’t have new old stock on hand, so they had to be the best of what was available. Or maybe just the only thing available 😂😂😂

They were the only thing available. And way to often Dana would have to reorder parts several times until he recieved usable parts. Or send to machine shop to correct problems. Near the end they did a bunch of D3 steering clutches, in genral most of the parts from CTP were unusable. Hopefully the liners and pistons are round and actually fit together.

Nice lower block repair! It should last the life of the rest of the machine.

Hit yet another roadblock. The manual shows three different part numbers that piece together for the engine oil pan gasket: 4F7055, 4F7056, and 4F7701. Somewhere along the line, CAT merged them with a single part number. The one the dealer supplied me with (2L5245) doesn’t match up in the back half. Does anyone know the correct part number I should have??

Ok, we have the correct oil pan gasket figured out for an 8U/9U. It’s part number 7H1671. The dealer overnighted a new one at their expense. Just my luck, it arrived broken. So they had to order yet another one that should be in tomorrow.

We decided that for a complete overhaul, all pumps (oil, fuel transfer, and water) should also be gone through.

In the teardown of the water pump, we found just the slightest bit of wear on the surface of the impeller that contacts the hard carbon thrust washer. Something a guy could touch up easily with a fly cutter on the milling machine. The book only states that the surface must be a “smooth lapped surface.” My only question with that is if there is a known spec not to exceed when touching that face up? I have plenty other U series D4’s and D6’s that use the same impeller, so for fun I brought in an aftermarket impeller with the updated CAT part number (with what I have into this thing already, what’s another $43? 😂😂).

You can see the various differences between the original and the updated aftermarket one in the pics. It may not be super obvious in the picture, but the height of the wear face on the new impeller sits lower than that of the old one. Without using a depth mic I don’t know just how big the difference is. Granted, there could be a difference in location of the press fit taper in the bore of the new impeller to compensate for that….or not?

Also notice that the contact surface of the hard carbon thrust washer is much smaller on the new seal assembly.

Most of those old carbon seal water pumps have been upgraded to ceramic seal per attached....

The aftermarket impeller upon further inspection is cast iron and there is no ceramic wear disc bonded to it. Cleaned the old one up with one small pass of the fly cutter and went back with it.

Lucky for me, UPS busted up my oil pan gaskets yet again!! 🤬 You would think CAT would get wise to it and send them attached to a piece of particle board so the UPS guys can’t break them over their knee or whatever they’re doing 🤯. We’ll see if they make it again tomorrow….we’ll start taking bets now!

Hi Nicky, I had the same issue with a D9H impeller, the aftermarket one was from memory about 3mm different in height like yours, so th cold one got a clean up and back in it went with out issue still running 2 years later.
