The reason that I was curious if you found a solution, is, I have the same issue on a D4 7U. Bled and bled. fresh fuel, no fuel pressure. New plunger and gasket, machined the bottom plate on the pump, new filters, and more. It runs on ether. Got me stumped.

If I remember correctly, there are 3 places to check for fuel... The low pressure bleed port, the high pressure bleed port, and the injector lines. Have you checked to see if fuel is coming out of these? That may help you diagnose the problem.

MY first Caterpillar. I have several vintage and other machinery, as well as vintage cars and trucks. No stranger to mechanical work. I have the on-line (PDF) manuals for the D4, and seem to be making progress. I really think I just have air somewhere. But may be something worse. Tomorrow, I will try again!

ropot, As this is your first Cat, you may be the victim of the throttle detent syndrome that has stumped many others... The throttle linkage on these Cats has quite a bit of slop or excess travel before and after the detent that separates fuel on and fuel off.
You might be pulling the throttle to what you think is open, but you are up againist the detent... Try opening to that point, and then give it a sharp pull, and see if the lever comes back a couple of inches more, thus opening the fuel rack. It sounds like you've done everything else right.

i found using the lever on the govenour itself was more positive than the seat controls a little slop here there and everywhere adds up. and yes make sure it is fully open when starting. and the engine is properly preheated. when its properly warmed and everything is working right you should be able to drop the decomp and add fuel at the same time and it should fire almost imeadiatley. well ours always did.

Well, after three days of changing filters, pressurizing the fuel system, checking all lines and bleeding the injectors I finally realized that I was trying to start the d2 with the start/run lever in the Start position, not the Run position as it should be. Had fuel and compression (I thought) so WHY wouldn't the old Cat start? After I got it right she fired right up. I had my brain in the Stupid position.

Thank you, I will re-check it again. Two months ago, I had the cover off the 4 lifter units and found one stuck up. Got it loose very easily, so all 4 go up and down. Rack moves about an inch left and right, and meshes in the 'gear wheels' of the pumps. I will try this again. It seems to me it should have more travel. Thanks for your help!!
