you can even search for your self on parts.cat the cat parts site. note some of the older part numbers need a zero or 2 added after the first 2 characters for the system to work as the current stuff uses six character codes. you can also search using google and sometimes you can get updated numbers that way.

if you have part numbers the dealers are more helpful as they dont have listings for some of the older gear by model but they can still search individual part numbers.

this is why the parts book is so important without it you cant get parts. there is a copy in the tech library but try and find yourself a hard copy.

while hunting down parts I have a few questions before reassembly. The threads on the lower shaft were flattened somewhat and the retaining nut will not run up tight.
I thought about using a file to try to fix the issue but would rather use the correct die to do this because this shaft is probably unobtainable. I measured the bearing journal and threads on both ends and they all spec out to 1.575 within a couple thou. Here lies my rub I don't know what size. I have ascertained that it is 12 threads per inch with a thread gauge and I have a 1-1/2"x12nc die and it is to small any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Can't find a 1-7/16"x12 if in fact they exist and 1-5/8 should be way to big.

Another issue is the trans shifting boot. I saw somewhere that someone used a cvc boot off of some auto does anyone know make/model my local auto parts store hates it when I show up there with a difficult scenario like this (young kids who if they can't find it in their computer they can't help you types).

Can I assume that the factory handles for clutch and steering levers are not available and I will I have to fab up something myself?

I am sure there will be more requests later and once again thank you all for the advice this has been relatively painless experience so far.

Hi, dflect1.
You CAN 'assume' whatever you like but you may just find that the handles for the controls are still available. Work your vocal chords in front of your friendly local Cat dealer.

I 'assume' that you still have the nut that came off those threads? It should give a clue about the thread size. type and pitch. Or, if you are buying a new nut, that would be an even better guide using a thread gauge.

JUst my 0.02.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Dflect1,
You could use a thread file to clean it up as per the image below.

Hi, rax200.
Thanks for that. I had forgotten about those jiggers - must be 'fossilage' creeping up on me.

many parts are still available the big button grease fittings and those handles are the easy ones and fairly cheep too as they were use well into the 70s and the grease fittings are still used. we paid 7.50 for em from hastings (cat dealer) when alemite wanted 21 bucks each. if you have part numbers the dealer parts team are quite helpful.
for a cheap shifter boot go to the hardware or plumbing supplies and get a silicone dektite (the red one for high temp applications. dektites are used to seal roof penetrations such as vent or flue pipes)they come in several sizes. and a small tube of sikaflex 227 urethane sealant adhesive or similar (must be nuetral cure)

some thing to remember these vintage cats almost always used SAE threads, standards and bolt patterns as they were American designed machines.

use a thread file or better yet take it to a machinist and get them to chase the thread in the lathe. they could make you a shaft if they have a spline cutting machine it can even be done with a indexer or dividing head in a horizontal milling machine. i would replace the nut. the original nut is stretched. they could also make a new nut. the shaft has part number 2b8925. heres the detail to use to make one (its amazing what you can find with google search)
 FIRST END STYLE SPLINED (STRAIGHT)
 END SIMILARITY NOT IDENTICAL
 SECOND END STYLE EXTERNAL THREADED
 OVERALL LENGTH 22.375 INCHES NOMINAL
FIRST END DIAMETER 1.7000 INCHES NOMINAL
FIRST END SPLINE LENGTH 2.250 INCHES NOMINAL
FIRST END SPLINE MINOR DIAMETER 1.2500 INCHES NOMINAL
FIRST END SPLINE MAJOR DIAMETER 1.7000 INCHES NOMINAL
SECOND END DIAMETER 1.5750 INCHES NOMINAL
SECOND END EXTERNAL THREAD LENGTH 0.687 INCHES NOMINAL
 STEP QUANTITY 4
 FIRST END SPLINE QUANTITY 10
LARGEST STEP DIAMETER 2.220 INCHES NOMINAL
MATERIAL STEEL

it also should have a lock tab washer or lock ring part numbers are 2b3559 for the nut and 2b3560 for the ring and bearing 1b4118 spacer 2b8837. the bearing, nut and thin spacer on the other end is the same. the bearings should be fairly standard go to a decent bearing joint and they will be able to help you. cat used timken, skf and hyatt bearings from factory.since its apart i would fit new bearings as its easy to do now than later.
