Tapered shaft so it will be tight. I have used heat, within reason. Had the puller tight, heated and tightened the puller and nothing. Did not want to heat it more, and walked away. A few minutes latter it popped off.

Just wondering why you are removing the starting engine flywheel?
Serviceman's Reference Manual, form FEO30521-02, does not require removal of that part and shows a picture of the clutch pack coming out with the flywheel in place.
I have taken the flywheel clutch out of two late number 7U tractors and have not needed to mess with the starter engine flywheel.
You also need to check very carefully that the main case is not broken from the damage shown in the photos.
I looked again and tractors with the one piece case cover (before 7U16998) the manual does say to remove the starting motor flywheel.

Hi All,
If that is the correct SN it should have a split top cover on the gear box, so the part above the cluch will come of separate to the rear portion and without removing the pony flywheel (Just remove the linkage as described earlier)
I have a better copy of the SRB and parts book in the pile I was going to scan this week, so I will scan them tonight and send to Tony to include them in the library.
Regards
Daryl

Ok purchased service ref manual today and thanks rax 200 your are correct after closer inspection it looks like it is split. Thats the good news. Bad news is I made an attempt with puller and some heat. I hope i didn't cook seal, it was leaking a little I assume but hard to tell will 70+ years of gunk. I will deal with that problem later. willwingo pointed out that there are changes at SN: 16998 mine is just a few hundred after, the reason for the confusion about flywheel. So the cover is split, front portion comes off first after linkage is disconnected then back half. lifting eyes, the easy way to hang this stuff? These three holes in the rear of back cover on both side where I would pull from seem to be threaded but are filled with cork. Is this old school way to keep water out? or leave cork alone! Forgot to take photo before I left the location. Do I have to back off steering clutches to remove rear cover? IO think I saw something to that affect in a NW Hillbilly vid ? Also to get to the lower trans shaft (that comes out the back) this whole differential assembly will have to be removed? Once again thanks, fellas, for all your help?

yes packing with cork was the old trick to keep holes clean. yes lifting eyes are a good idea or use shackles or bolt n nut to hold chain in place

Good day! no broken gears in transmission case, upper shaft doesn't look to bad. lower doesn't look bad either from what I can see. Next move is clutch and diff. Are there any surprises removing diff? I see bolt on the outside of clutch packs and the main caps but how do the brakes come out? Haven't pulled brake covers yet that might explain things.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hello, managed to get bottom trans shaft out and grateful for the minimum amount of damage done. I was expecting a casefull of broken teeth and much carnage. The only damage was the rear threads are flattened on the lower shaft from riding on trans housing after the nut came lose and bearing came out of housing.
I might have to hone the housing as ther is a ridge left buy the shaft but will wait until i get new bearing and hone to fit. here is retaining clip for the front of the shaft seen here
is just made of bailing wire probably not oem. The rear clip ( The whole problem!) is nowhere to be seen. Now I obviously need parts, gaskets I subscribed membership to hopefully find parts solutions for this mess but are finding it difficult. Do the new cat dealers deal with this stuff? Any suggestions would be appreciated Thank You.

Hi Dflect1, extremely lucky for the outcome, like you say leave housing until bearing is in hand, only clean off if you have to, fast pace at getting it stripped and sorted you have done well cheers

Hi, dflect1.
For some strange reason, I have this feeling that your D4 may have spent some time inna 'shady tree workshop' sometime in its past.
Your friendly local Cat dealer should be able get those parts for you. If they can't find your model of D4 on their computers. ask them to look under "Classic Parts".
Just my 0.02.
You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.
