Steel wool as used in fine oil finishing of wood might be a better material than sand paper. It takes off soft residue but doesn't cut into the wood. It burnishes rather than cutting as abrasive does. Witness a really fine oil finish on a shotgun stock. It ought to work on the soybean plastic that was once used for steering wheels. Ditto on fixing the cracks. No good comes from cracks in the wheel material.
Just a wild idea I had. Good luck!

yes cabinet makers steel wool would be a good choice. come in several grades. note it is flammable especially the fine stuff. handy for lighting camp fires all you need is a 9volt battery and a small amount of it short across battery and you have a fire lighter. careful you dont burn yourself doing it though.

Hi Deas, I'm in Tallong so a bit over half way between Mittagong and Goulburn. Yeah you might be right. I haven't come across anyone yet, but you never know!

Hi, trainzkid88.
Unless somebody moved one or tuther of 'em without consulting me, it'z more'n 'about half a day's ride' from Picton to Wauchope - cain't remember if it'z any shorter the other way.
Hi, LangdonStevenson.
So you'd be a bit East of Marulan and West of Kangaroo Valley. That would put you in Chapter 29 territory. If you go to the bottom of the members page straight under the chapters location map and click on "Chapters', it will bring up a list of chapters. Click on the "Read More" button for each chapter and it will tell their territory and their contacts.
Give it a shot. Heck, you might even find one or two of 'em who can converse in more that just a few grunts.
(I suppose I'd better put "LOL" in there or people might think I'm serious.)
Just my 0.02.
You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

And yes about 5km North East of Marulan.

Hi Langdon,
You are in luck, not far from you there is a Chapter 29 Member, Andy Divall, he is located halfway between Marulan and Goulburn at the Quarry site on the Northside of the Hume Highway. He has a fully restored D8L in his office foyer as well as other things. Andy is very approachable and will welcome you into Chapter 29, the President Phil Rye lives at Berridale and has a huge collection of ex Snowy Mountains machines.
Just of note, the Chapter recently acquired a running and in reasonable condition, D9H with air cab, SU blade and Quad ram rippers, it will be tarted up ready for 2025 display.
