Yes , very nice tractor. Shouldn't have too much trouble getting it running. If the pony mag doesn't have spark; take it off and clean the points make sure fuel flows trough the line and lite her up. Are the steering clutches stuck?

I did get her in the barn and it takes a bit of effort to get a dead Cat into the barn on your own. I don't have a lot of room due to the hilly nature of this area, but short-chaining the drawbar to the Massey worked pretty well. I had the steering clutches tied back, which I like to think helped.

I had a bit of time available to start investigating, it is apparent that this tractor has not run for some time contrary to the thoughts of the seller....

Here's what I know so far:
 - Pony fuel tank is toast, rusted out at the top around the filler neck and now can find a new life as a percussion instrument
 - The aftermarket fuel filter, blocked and no good
 - Pony no sparky

I've taken the hood off, opened the mag, one contact in the cap missing, points cleaned up, proper gap, connected a lead to the mag, still no spark. It seems to me that something else is up. If anyone has a good method of further diagnosis let me know, otherwise I think it should come off for an expert to renew. While I'm in here, and since I have no reason to believe the carb is ship-shape, it'll come off for a rebuild. I'll need to find a fuel tank for sure this one seems beyond reasonable repair. For some reason all I had were metric flare nut wrenches, so I'll get a set tomorrow and get the fuel lines disassembled and see if they are serviceable or if new ones need to be fabricated. I'm not holding my breath. My plan is to work methodically through the pony systems and get the pony operating, then go to the main engine.

Other items of note/concern are that the steering clutches are well out of adjustment, we'll see if that is all it is.

Try a good soak of citric acid on that tank. Holes or just corrosion.

Have fun!

I didn't know any of these old farm Cats could look so good! It appears to have the old style partial flow oil filter. I don't know whether to tell you to put on the full-flow filter kit, or preserve the original equipment. I notice that it has the old heat exchanger on the intake air pipe. I feel that the later long exchanger through the intake manifold is better on cold mornings, but enough better to make me change the original equipment? However you go about it, you have a real jewel.

@bernie - unfortunately holes otherwise I would have cleaned it for sure. Fun so far, I enjoy it.

@jack - I plan to keep it as original as possible, it won’t see long days in the field and what is has has served it for along time.

I do think the mag will need repair, I am at my limit when it comes to them, any suggestions as to where to send it.

You said the mag wasn't working and you hooked up a wire ... I hope you did not do what I did. I hooked a power wire to the stud on the outside of the mag that stud is to ground the mag so it shuts down. I found out loo late and burned up a condenser for sure and maybe even the coil too.

Nice looking D2, Send the mag out for service, I am sure it will benefit from a clean and oil to start. My suggestion on the gas tank is cut it in 1/2, sand blast, weld it back together and then coat with fuel tank liner.. Virtually any tank you buy will need the same treatment. It is somewhat common for the clutch linings to swell overtime, I think it is connected to moisture. This will make the adjustment way off. It will be running in no time

@Fat Dan, I didn't do that, in fact, checking the switch with an ohm meter it seems to be grounded all the time, so I disconnected the wire and will have to take a closer look at the switch.

@Steve A, That is good advice, however the tank has rusted through about 2/3 of the way around the filler neck. in this case, another approach may be to cut out that section and weld in new metal, but I think I'll take a run at locating another first and see how it goes.
