The 3208 is to new for the "Service Tool" information I have:)
How about a picture of that injector installation so that we can identify for sure what this application is!!!

...we're wondering if somewhere along the line, a previous owner maybe swapped out the injectors with ones from something else. Is that possible? I'll post some pictures as soon as I can to help with identification.

Hi Team,
OM, the tool is indeed the sleeve metering fuel system injection pump retaining nut removal tool---2H7479.
It appears to be a revival of the socket (item #2 pictured) from this tool Grp. used to service G/plug equiped engines. The splined nut is used to gain the necessary clearance with the G/plug installed as stated earlier by others.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B

Hi edb,
Thanks for the info.
Could we conclude that this is on a D315 engine....I'm thinking the D330 is a different retaining nut thread and a hex pattern??

Hi OM,
to the best of my knowledge the splined nut was used on the smaller early engines, as you state, as originally they were not designed to have G/plugs.
The later engines were obviously designed (D330, 3300 series etc.) with bigger prechambers to accept the G/plugs without the need to find the extra retainer nut clearance. I would also say that the likes of D342 etc that the precombs were large enough to accept the G/plugs without the need for the splined nut. I feel sure that I only recall seeing the splined nut and G/plugs on the smaller engines.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Hey Old Magnet and gang...got the splined nut out with that special socket, no problem! I don't know how we'd have got those nuts out if we didn't have that tool! The O rings were shot and they were letting water squirt out around the pre-comb. chambers. ...So am I understanding correctly that these are factory retainers on the older D315's? Also... I have the valve pan removed and noticed that there is an awful lot of valve lash. Could you tell me how much the valve clearance should be on these old engines? Thanks again to everyone for all the help and advice you've given!:)

The setting should be .010" hot and if cold add an extra two (.012)
