Don't have alot of coin and the 12V starter is what I had saved back from another job. Most of the time I will be using the D6 dozer spring sumer and fall and use the D4 through the winter for pulling logs. I do have a few questions for you, starting with this one, now that I have the start part of it almost done I would like to add an alternator or I was wondering I have an older D4 thats junked out and looks as if the generator has the same bolt pateren as the D6 Do you think or know if that generator would bolt on and fit the gear train correctly?

Same 4F0089 generator (6v - 19 amp) fits both the D4400 and D315. Same drive gear 26T 8B6687 or 4F6472 (with spring hub). Mounting housing is different 7B7417 on the D4400, 4F6978 on the D318.
If I'm thinking right you could change the field coils to 12v, using the same armature.

If you're near an outlet usually, you could just put it on a battery charger overnight. Couple of starts a day would probably last you half a week over summer before needing a recharge

Hi M00051,
As OM said you can change the field coils to 12V ones and also the regulator to a 12V one, it will charge at 12V at about 10 Amps, and if it is only charging the battery that's fine

remember this isnt like a car where the alternator has to power all the electrical systems and charge a battery. so a slow 10 amp charge would work just fine. also your not stopping and starting every 10 minutes either.
the slower the charge the better for battery life a ideal according to CSIRO research is too match the charge in amps to the number of plates the battery has so 10 plate battery 8 to 10 amps is a good charge rate.
there is a couple of mobs that do alternator conversions for these old things. one i have seen on the forum is to gut the original generator and use it as a drive adapter to belt drive a alternator that is mounted above the generator.

I'm going to look into 12V field coils, does any one have any company names for alternator conversions. Charging the battery would also work but I have a bit of a problem my fuel transfer pump does not put out any fuel pressure. I disassembled the pump and everything looks good even the relief valve and spring and I used bucket and hose above the engine for no restriction so if I add an electric fuel pump I will need a charging system. When I had the pump off I blew air up through the fuel port to the filter with a rubber tipped blower and the gauge went right up. I know the pressure is supposed to be around 30psi. but is there a range that it could be? Thanks! Vic

#1 Can I download short video, 48.4 MB?
#2 Anyone have any ideas about who sells alternator kits for D6 9U?
#3 If In put 60psi. electric fuel pump on is that too much pressure?

I have recently done the conversion on my D4 7U. Old Magnet's instructions are first rate. I had one thought and bought a tool that worked out well. I purchased from Matco a long allen socket with the ball or swivel end. I had plenty of clearance to use it and it worked great. The cut back wrench works, but with the socket, it was smooth and went in great. Thanks to all who have helped and encouraged me on my project. Once I overhaul the carb, the pony motor will go back on too. The pistons from Australia worked and fitted great.

The best alternator kit looks like this but it is pricey. Check with Florin tractor. Requires using your drive gear.
Fuel pressure max is 15psi, not 30psi, Anything much below 5psi can lead to hard starting.

Thank You very much for the information, that alternator set up looks awesome I sent Florin email for pricing.
I'll have to try and find fuel regulator for electric pump or check out the manual pump again.
