My 5UD2's left steering clutch started slipping at the Rock River show Labor Day weekend. I finally got the time to take it apart. A friend has the Cat tooling to pull the clutch and outer drum that I will be picking up later this week. Lots of pictures

I would recommend new if you are using new discs. I would still save the old drum for someone else, or for a later low budget job that is using old parts to" make it go"

Neil, could you please give me all the part numbers for the clutches and drum and John's contact info. I have been following your thread and the only real problem I had taking my D2 apart was the cap that holds the pivot shaft to the final drive case. Everything came apart fairly easy. I have a friend (retired mechanic) that says he has all the Cat tooling to pull the steering clutch and the outer drum.

You'll really enjoy turning that Cat when it is done.

My D2 drums looked about like that when I took it apart. I just needed release bearings, my clutch stack still had life left in it and the wallet didn't. I've never had any trouble with mine hanging up, but then the same plates are in the same place on the drums.

If you have the money, I'd agree with STEPHEN. If you need to keep the budget tight, I'm sure you could get away with new friction discs only and they'll wear in O. K.

I am going to get the prices and make a choice. Pete, my helper couldn't make it so I found a way to do it myself. Getting it to work right took some time but I found the right spot to get it done

Good work, that is indeed a clever master pin driver holder, I'm almost always by myself so ideas like that come in handy.

Once done you'll enjoy turning left so much, you'll want to do the right side!!
