Neil, I had an idea the updated greaseable steering clutch thrust bearings had a slightly different design bearing holder to the original oil type thrust bearings, is that what you have, an updated type to suit grease entering under pressure as distinct from oil flowing in under gravity?

Hi Mike,
the parts I have definitely match up with the parts catalog so I'm probably overthinking it. A bit of wear on the cage means it's a bit more open that it probably was when new. The holes in the back of the cage that are used to drive the old bearing out are supposed to be corked up, so as Stephen suggested, I'm going to assemble it as it is.

One other thing Stephen - how does the bushing on the inside of the pressure plate get lubed. It's a plain bronze bushing about 3/4" wide. Presumably it somehow gets some of the grease that escapes from the thrust bearing. It might be possible, with a flexible tube, to drip some oil down from the rectangular cover on top of the transmission case at the rear, in case the shaft gets a bit dry.

Neil, my understanding is that bronze bush is a self lubing type, possibly graphite impregnated, that was what I was told when I asked years ago, but I'm usually mistaken, I'm not sure if they can be re-lubed for another 50 years service or they are good for life, or till they wear out anyway.

Had my guy drill new holes for the set screws. The new retaining nut did not come with the half-moons. Also, for GP, enjoy this photo of a brand new inner hub, twelve new steel discs, the six pins and keepers! : )

Won't be this weekend though, as the new thrust bearing I got might be a low quality special, as it's a bit rough. I've ordered a new genuine from Cat which, although 2x the price, hopefully will roll a bit smoother. I still need to dig out some broken studs and such from the final drive assembly so there's plenty to do.

At least when you use Cat bearings they are fit for purpose and the prices are not bad, I've used aftermarket and Cats cheaper Classic range bearings and the quality is not as good, with fewer balls than the originals. My good buddy Joe who is a veteran Cat Mechanic in his 70's told me the story of rebuilding a D2 backend just like you are and his local bearing shop supplied supposedly good quality bearings for the cross shaft which Joe fitted, he said on it's first test drive the tractor only got about 100 yards from the shed and the back end locked up, those aftermarket bearings had collapsed, and from that day on he only ever used Cat bearings, because the extra $100 or $200 is cheap compared to having to open up the tractor again.

Luckily, genuine is only 30 clams more. I picked the first one up in a shipment of other stuff thinking it would be NOS, but sadly no - after fiddling with it for a while, blowing air through it and whatnot, I decided not to use it. It'll be filed under "R" for recycling....

Here's one for GP - left clutch pack is reassembled and sitting in place, ready to be pressed with the new 20t hollow ram cylinder that's due on Friday. I also had my guy turn down a couple of adaptors for pressing. He made them out of 8620? gear steel so they should be able to take the load. Also has a 1" center hole to pass the 3/4-16 x 13" Fastenal is sending for the pressing job. I understand I'm only to press the hubs up to ~10 tons. Everything you see in the picture is new, less the transmission case :thumb:
