Hello, I had this 1974, delivered from about 65 miles north of me yesterday. Runs good but of course has some issues. Hopefully it will run a while.

Sprocket segments look pretty bad I guess, I will do some measuring on the rails . It has berco rails with the sawtooth master link, bushes have some wear, not turned . Front idlers are pretty new looks like. Pads are good and rollers look good except for the 3 right lower ones that are welded on- they look ok except for the fact that their welded. Missing a front bolt on one front roller, not broke off luckily, I will put one in before running again.

Was told it had rt final rebuilt recent and steering clutches and brakes done. Operates very good but Im a rookie and had previously only run a Deere 550H so this Cat is totally different and is going to take me a while to get worth a darn on.

3306 turbo no smoke runs strong, throttle linkage needs adjusted or some new parts as it wont shut off without opening the side panel and yanking on the linkage.

Small land owner, no commercial any time soon.

Hi, Davo727.
Nice catch, looks pretty neat - at least from about 12,500 miles away. I suspect that a partial undercarriage upgrade may have been done without the sprocket segments being included - not a huge issue with bolt on segments.

Horses for courses and all that but we don't see very many 'bob-tailed' dozers DowNunda in Australia. If they don't have a 'backscratcher', they looked sorta 1/2-dressed.

Just my 0.02. Thanks for sharing. And enjoy it.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Probably no need for a ripper, if it's in South Texas more than likely it's going to be run head first into sticking or stinging brush of some kind.

Those sprocket segments will put premature wear on the bushings and need changed, but it looks like the tractor has been taken care of from what I can see. It's hard to beat a D6C.

Right I dont need a rear ripper, Its real sandy here . I am going to buy or build a front rake though and build a knife attachment to hang off the left end of the blade that hangs down to cut roots.

I have a little piece of a larger chunk of private land that is surrounded by the national forest since the previous families ancestors owned it since the mid 1800s before the rest of it was deemed national forest.

Hi, D9gdon and Davo727.
Even though I normally live 'upside down', I have driven across parts of Texas on I 10 while travelling from Baton Rouge to Denver. I don't recollect seeing a whole lot of rocks. The comment about that machine being ripper-less was not a judgement on the machine but rather an observation of differing requirements in different parts of the world.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

A D-6C is a sweet machine. It won't take you long to get good on it. After fixing up the problems you found, you will have one nice piece of machinery. Good find.

D-4 7U-43159 with 4S dozer and Cat 40 scraper, D-7 3T-1179 with Cat 7S hydraulic dozer, D-7 17A 13,944, D-8 14A-1160 with Cat 8S cable dozer, Cat 12-99E-4433 Grader. All runners and users.

Hi davo727, That looks like a nice D6C. I think it is a good idea to change your profile to allow your town or at least your general location to show, you won't have to type it in or have people ask for it.
Be sure to use the correct part number Caterpillar bolts on those bottom rollers as they are special strength bolts.
Just change the sprocket segments to prevent excess wear on the bushings of those Berco sealed and lubricated tracks.
Looks like it is time for new end-bits and flipping the cutting edges.
Other than that it looks solid, good find and close to home too.

Deas comments made me look twice. I realize the Australians seem to think even their lawnmowers and baby carriages need rippers on the back, so they're surprised to see anything without.

Being from this side of the puddle, I'm a little more used to seeing a ripper sometimes, a winch sometimes, a CCU or PCU sometimes, maybe a Be-Ge pump once in a while. The first photo of unloading the tractor did catch my eye, but I didn't identify why until Deas comment and looking twice.

I don't think I've EVER seen a machine completely bare back, no drawbar or anything. That is an interesting thing to see. Nothing wrong with it, I just am not used to seeing some provision to tow.

By the way, that is a very sweet D6C, which is one of the sweetest tractors made by Caterpillar. Garlic Mom likes hers so much that she had to appropriate it from Gary during the short time he "thought" he owned it. As others have commented, swapping sprocket segments, adding new end bits and flipping the cutting edge are relatively easy jobs and will leave you with a tractor that'll probably last you for the rest of your life and leave you very satisfied.

Very nice acquisition.

Pete.
