Sorry for not replying sooner Paul, I have been Stateside for the past 4 weeks and only got home yesterday, I'll try and get some photo's and measurements of the parts you are talking about in the next few days, from my research it appears those valves are not available off the shelf unfortunately.

Mike

Hi Mike,
good to see you made it back to OZ. Trust you all had a great trip.

Been thinking--dangerous for me to do that--the New Scroll Cat Injection pumps use a largish valve of the normal style in their lift pumps.
You may be able to machine out the hole, leaving a step for the valve cage to seat against, in the screw in piece to take one of these higher flow valves.
They are P/No 7W0402.
May be order one and see if it is suitable for your needs.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Hi Eddie, yes, safely home, had a great trip. Thanks for the input, next time I'm heading to Bendigo I'll order one of those valves to have a look, they only cost $1.61, as you are suggesting it may not be too hard to machine the fuel pump body to accept a different valve, I was originally hoping a valve out of a Ford Falcon or old EH Holden might be suitable and press straight in. I'll give you a call in the next few days.
All the best
Mike

Mike,

I too working on fuel pump for a Cat 22 and found the same rusted valve part in the chamber above the diaphragm. I bought the kit from Then and Now and while many of the parts are useful (and I'll keep the kit) it's not an exact match. I did supply the casting number (2151.) I called Then and Now and discussed the situation but they do not have this part. I am trying to figure out the dimension so that I can machine a replacement, and I'd be more than happy to share my drawing when complete. But I am having a tough time figuring out exactly the clearances. I assume the small round disc in the valve is held in the closed position by the spring and moved up by the output action of the pump diaphragm. The disc has to be big enough to cover the hole but small enough to allow fuel to pass by and out the top of the valve when unseated. And I assume there was a detail inside the valve to prevent the disc from topping out and blocking the fuel flow. Any insights or other pictures of the rusted part are welcome. Also, can you measure the diameter of the disc and let me know?

Hi Paul, Tell me exactly what you want measured, there are 2 different discs in those pumps. You can see the remnants of the rusted "cage" that held one of the discs in place, and you can see that larger one way valve is almost exactly 1" in diameter.

Mike

Mike,

I am learning more about fuel pumps than I thought there was to know. Part of the fun of this hobby. The part I wanted to measure is the rusted valve body on the left in my photo. It would press into the groove inside the threaded brass part. I wanted to machine a new one but did not understand how the fuel exited the part. In the center of the photo there is a new fuel valve purchased from a car parts place and now it becomes obvious. I will probably machine a new brass parts that will accept the valve as a press fit. Once I get it done I will share the drawing.

Hi Paul, That cap on the left side of your photo does not "press into the groove inside the threaded brass part", there were 3 thin legs as part of the valve that hold the "cap" above the threaded brass part and yours have all rusted away, my "cap" still has some remnants of those legs, that cap simply retains the spring in place above the disc, your new valve has 3 "legs" if that makes sense.

If you look closely at my photo's up near the vernier on the right side you will see my old "cap" laying on it's side with one of it's original legs showing, the rest were rusted away like yours. I think you are on the right track with that new valve, finding one with a outer diameter of 1" looks like the solution, though I think you might find you still have the remains of the old steel valve body inside your threaded brass section, do you see the bent "tongue" from one of your old "legs" in your photo.

I found another pump that still had an intact valve and hopefully you will see better how the original looked, the outer diameter of the valve still looks like 0.97" when pressed into the brass "nut", so I wonder if the original outer dimension was around 1" ? From my basic research in the Parts Number books the R4 used the same one way valves in it's Stewart Warner fuel pump so I'm kind of surprised it appears hard to find replacement valves, or more to the point that no one in our group has crossed this hurdle already, as I assume those valves might have been used in a large number of pumps in the 1930's, and not just on Caterpillar motors.

The Stewart Warner part number for that valve in the photo is #1522354, the other valve in the pump is #1522319, if I could find a old Carby Shop here in Oz I reckon there might be a box full of those valves gathering dust on a shelf out the back, I've just got to find that shop and the old gentleman who runs it.

Mike

Mike,

The pictures are a great. You are correct that my concept of how that valve was made was incorrect. I will work on a drawing for a replacement as time permits, and will share it when done.

an ongoing issue?
I studied the "Then & Now" website a couple of times.
I am of the conclusion that they REALLY seem to have a handle on the trials and tribulations of Fuel Pumps.

Anyhow, how is this project going?
I have a Fuel Pump to take apart soon but am waiting for you guys to come up with a reliable solution so as I am not re-inventing the wheel!

One Question, I noticed you referred to it as "AC #152XXXX" is that a model number code or a serial number? Reason is there are references to finding the Info on the sides of the diaphragm cover but nothing that really stated that 152XXXX is a Model #, else I need to read the website again as I missed something???

Hi drujinin, That #152XXXX number came from the Twenty Two Parts Number book, that is the Stewart Warner part number of the valve, I was assuming/hoping someone could cross reference it to a more modern valve number because I phoned a old Carby Shop here in Oz (Wilsons Carburetors in Melbourne) the other day only to find the old Owner I'd spoken to in the past had sold the business to a younger guy who hadn't really even heard of Stewart Warner and said he was 99% certain he wouldn't be able to help.
