That's on a 40MT starter, they have a little more room.....as in very little more.
This starter can be used for this D4 7U pony ?[ATTACH=CONFIG]34554

These starters can be used on the D4 diesel engine, but not the pony motor. Much too large for that.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

Guess you weren't kidding when you said they made some room. I guess sometimes in the heat of the moment people do things that when we look back on them years later we wonder......What were they thinking?

Got a couple of Interstate 12v batteries......They're group 31 with 950 CCA. Decided to make my own cables. I'm using 1 gauge wire and I got all that I needed from,
www.delcity.net/store/Battery-Cables-&-Accessories/
. I'm planning on puttting the batteries on the left fender as close to the starter as possible. For now I
'll leave the pony stay where it is until I see how everything works out.

A big
Thank you to Old Magnet and Johnstone for the information in January. Please forgive the delay in posting a reply - eldest daughter is my internet person and has young children......
Triodiode supplied the helical starter drive but at the time the housing was on backorder with an unknown arrival date. I emailed a few other US suppliers none of whom replied.
However, Wood Auto supplies in Huddersfield, UK could supply and freighted via TNT (To Australia in less than a week!). If anyone else is having difficulty sourcing the housing, this is the web address :-http://www.woodauto.com/Component.aspx?Ref=BKT41419.
This Cat was bought as a non-goer. Now running well - needs work on clutch linkages on one side - so have to fix forklift to take canopy and fuel tank off to have a proper look....... Have attached a few photos of the work in (slow) progress.
Thanks once again.
Bob

I am planning to add a 40MT or 42MT to my fathers D69U Cat Dozer. But i am not sure about the correct (or best option) starter to purchase.
Could you help please

Also, do i need a straight gear or a helical gear on the starter?
Also 11 or 12 teeth?

Hello Dave
This thread is 11 years old. Most if not all of the people involved in this topic have moved on.
To answer your questions you need a helical gear with I think 11 teeth. Another member who goes by the forum name of Old Magnet is the best one to ask about this.
Either the 40MT or the 42MT will be fine. I think as OM pointed out the 42MT is an updated version of the 40MT.
