My Uncle Hurley had a lifting bar like in your scan. Where you have the lifting chain holes he attached 2 large turnbuckles connecting the other end to the common hoist point. By twisting to adjust one or the other turnbuckles he could adjust the levelness of the engine for mating up.

Hi Mike,
seem to recall our lifter had another loop put in about 6" in past the loop at one end that gave some more flexibility to lift engines with Stationary application radiators or around the other way for heavier clutches than a grader.

OIH,
the turn buckles would be a handy alteration for the reasons you mention as the bar as is a bit hit or miss.
