Is the 24 volt that much better than a 12 volt starter?

Oil Slick,

I too have one of those, but I would like some guidance for wiring it up to use. It's on a D-4400 engine, and I have no solenoid to go with it or any of the other appendages. Friend of mine sold me the engine with the starter on it, but I didn't get anything else. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob

Needs a Delco #1119866 24v solenoid.
Use this diagram but without glow plugs.

No, that is the old inertia type starter with remote solenoid.
You need the later 40MT or 50MT starter that has the direct mounted solenoid and drive engagement.
Also the conversion drive end housing and 12 tooth RH helical drive gear.

The remote solenoid that goes with the inertia drive starter uses a Delco #1119775 or #1119866 solenoid.

would Mike's old inertia starter fit my D2?

Yes, if you change the armature, the drive, and the drive end housing.
Guess I'm not getting through that the D2 starter is a different animal.
The only thing interchangeable is the motor case and brush frame assembly.

Thanks OM---I get it now that the D2, D311, is a one of a kind with its drive and drive end housing

That includes any original direct drive starters on the D3400, D2 as well.
