24 Volt Starter was created by Oil Slick
I have the this rebuilt 24V Cat starter that I will probably never use. I tested it today and it works great. The brand new 11 tooth helix gear and parts cost over $300 + labor. For Sale $475

OM, won't this starter fit the 17A bolt pattern and work just fine?

Would you have a part number for the large solenoid that goes with the starter?

Thank You

No, that is the old inertia type starter with remote solenoid.
You need the later 40MT or 50MT starter that has the direct mounted solenoid and drive engagement.
Also the conversion drive end housing and 12 tooth RH helical drive gear.

The remote solenoid that goes with the inertia drive starter uses a Delco #1119775 or #1119866 solenoid.

OM, the inertia type starter was on my 955 and D6. Are the bigger Cats different to not allow this starter to work?

The conversion drive end housing for the 17A and D8/9's is not SAE 3 pattern. Much larger bolt pattern. Also requires the indexing feature that the later starters have and the early 40MT doesn't. Forget about using that starter you have.

Hi Mike,
Don't know if your aware but you can get the starter, 50MT ready to go on ebay. It is a China knock off but that's about where they are all coming from now no matter what brand.

This is on one of the 3T Salyer pump tractors. Salyer and Boswell had many 3T and 17A tractors with Sawtelle and Rosprim 24" ditch pumps for moving water. I have four chassis, one 3T nearly complete with engine, one 17A nearly complete with engine and two 17A with no engines.

File Attachment:

I believe this is a 17A starter with the conversion kit mounted to a black adapter plate, which is bolted to the 3T flywheel housing.

Here is a photo of the starter boss on the 17A chassis next to it.

File Attachment:

I know the 3T is a dry clutch and the 17A is oil, but I'm hoping that if this really is a 17A starter kit, the starter will be sealed and have the O-ring on it when we remove it.

Pete.

If your so convinced that's what you have go ahead and try it and you will find out.
The only thing usable for the 17A there is the 50MT starter itself (no drive end housing).
Same for the 50MT that ag-mike has.
