That appears to be a well made "3-point Hitch"! There are enough spools left on that valve body to add more cylinders to your blade if you want.

Well I built a starter for it,rolls over good, good oil and fuel pressure, but I cant get any fuel out the top of the pumps. I bled all the bleeders. This engine is equipped with low oil/high water temp shutdown. Mounted to the side ot pump housing is this gizmo, and I suspect something is stuck. I believe to start engine, there is a lever on top of this unit with a handle, and I think you pull handle towards you and flip lock tab up to hold, start engine then release tab once oil pressure is built up? Anyway I have tried every combo with no fuel. Also the throttle control lever on govenor housing is broke and the hand control is broke and missing. I assume the control lever goes back for full fuel and forward to shut fuel off? I have tried every combo with this also still no fuel. I will get back to it soon, I plan on pulling the gizmo off the side of the pump for a look see.I believe this unit originally had the vernier type throttle control. Anybody care to shed some light. I would also like to find the throttle control of whatever type it is supposed to have. Here are some pics. Thanks Dean

Nice set of controls, yes you are missing the quadrant type governor control.

The lever you refer to is not a fuel control exactly.
That is a manual reset control to restart the engine after a pressure/temperature shutdown and allows manual movement of the rack to do a low rpm restart if the temp is still too high or oil pressure is low. The reset/restart position is against the stop and is normally left in the run position.

The temperature shutdown works in series with the oil pressure shutdown mechanism.

Once you get it going you can check the shutdown system by raising the engine temperature and have the temp. unit shut down the engine via the oil pressure shut down. The operating range for the temp. shutdown is 188 to 208 deg. F.

More stuff:
These are pretty reliable controls....used on all engines as attachments at the time. They can get loaded up with crud over time and may require a good cleaning. Unfortunately parts availability is probably limited to used.

Do you suppose the rack may just be stuck in shutoff? If you haven't been rotating the broken off control lever to pull against the governor spring, the flyweights probably have kept it in shutoff position anyway.

I think you should remove the unit from the side of the pump housing and see if the rack will move back and forth and the pump plungers are moving up and down as the engine rotates.

As with all old engines which have not run in a while, I would plan ahead how you will shut it down if it runs away. It can take a while to loosen all 4 injector lines, so I would plan on smothering off it's air supply with a board over the intake stack etc.

Then you could possibly run it with the unit removed to ensure the engine and governor work properly before reinstalling them.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

Yes, I plan on removing side cover to check everything, and also kill board in hand. Now O.M. the reset lever is the one on top withe flip up tab correct? The lever on the side of govenor houseing is speed control? Forward on thi lever shuts it down, back wide open?

Hey O.M. you mention the quadrant type governor control, but what is the vernier type for? I just purchased a d4400 engine and electric set parts book and it shows both types. I guess the governor on this engine is set to run at 1200 wide open?

The Vernier Control is one of several Governor options. It is used where tighter rpm setting and tighter regulation control is required, usually used with a 3% regulation governor as apposed to the standard 10% governor.

Forgot to ask:
Did you have any problems mounting that starter?

Also on the reset/restart lever.....the latch will automatically drop out when the engine starts and come up to operating speed.
