Thanks for the updates and pics everybody.

My rain gauge froze with water in it and broke but the neighbors say we got more than 3" of rain the past week. About 1.5 inches on Tuesday alone which caused one neighbors freshly cultivated field and seeded field to wash something horrible, probably 75+tons/acre erosion on some of the knobby hills.

Somehow our lentil ground didnt wash at all, even though there is 35% slope on some of it with little residue and small plant growth to hold the soil.

Shown is lentils up near home on the one sunny day this past week which was yesterday, doesnt show how muddy it was.

Lower elevation spring wheat looking great, it should head out before our winter wheat and out yield it too which is pretty rare.

Looking into the town of Peck for those familiar with the area. Peck is 900ft elevation this spot of our field is about 2700ft.

NIF We are in Corbett Or and it has been the same here. It has been 3 weeks today since we have been able to get into the field. Suppose to be seeding oats for hay but water is actually pooling in the fields and running through the swales. Looks like Dec or Jan.

Well, nothing exciting to report up here except more rain, in fact it washed the newly seeded alfalfa pretty good Friday afternoon. Looks like I'll be cutting hay across the road in my neighbor's field next year. My wife and I took a road trip to LaGrande, OR Thurs. to pick up a header and took the steep and deep route down through Enterprise, loaded up at noon, hit Circle C for conditioner parts in Hermiston, had dinner in Waitsburg and arrived back in Julietta at 7:30. Trailer lights were out on the Dodge so we stayed over and hightailed it back up to the ranch Friday morning. Mostly cow/hay country down there and no steel tracks were spotted until we got east of Touchet. Thought some might appreciate the engineering that went into the road that drops down to the Grande Ronde River, and back up. If you look waaaaay up in the right hand corner that is NIF's territory.

BleedinRed, Nice shot of the Buford Grade. If you could fly right up and over the ridge in the middle of the picture , you'd come out real close to my place.

Well nothing much new here except rain, rain, cold, and more rain. Got another .65" in just a couple hours this morning and tonight into tomorrow is supposed to be another 3/4 to 1&1/2

Spring lentils are still very small and starting to turn red and yellow in all the wet areas from the constant moisture.

ALL our wheat both winter and spring will be sprayed with fungicides for stripe rust with helicopter once we get some good weather. In the past 20 years rust has only been a problem in winter wheat once and spring wheat two or three times. All our wheat varieties now have HTAP which is high temperature adult plant resistance to the stripe rust but that requires temps above 80F or so to kick in and normally by now we have had some 80-90 degree days but so far this spring/summer our warmest temp has been 76F.

Spring wheat on lower ground is headed out and looking good minus the rust. Winter wheat is looking better but most of it has not started to head out yet so it looks like we will be cutting in September for sure this year.

Got stuck twice in the first round spraying canola so had to call it quits but it has been difficult to spray all spring due to the mud.

Rust is a big deal here in the Waitsburg area as well. The planes are flying every chance they get. I understand they (the flying services) are bringing planes in from all over to help.

I thought rust had been eradicated since the great rust days of Omar wheat in the early 60's.

That's why I gotta leave farming to those who know. I've been away too long!!

NIF you are later than we are down here. Some fields are starting to turn already. Those few sunny days we had last week brought on the beginning of change.

Yes the rust was getting started down in the Walla Walla area over a month ago and moved into the palouse a few weeks ago and the guys from the university that keep track said that every wheat field checked in Whitman county (which stretches from the snake river almost to Spokane) had rust of some degree. Planes have been flying over there to spray whenever the weather allows. The rust just showed up in our fields this past week, we arent taking any chances as it is fairly cheap to apply the fungicide.

There were years in the past especially in spring wheat that our green combines would turn red at harvest from the rust in the crop.

Yes our crops always run way later than down there. Some wheat around Lewiston and Lapwai at less than 1000ft elevation is starting to turn as well even though it hasnt headed out yet in the upper elevations like my area, some of the eastern palouse, and the camas prairie. The lower elevations near Lewiston are going to have the best crop in years with these rains and the palouse looks pretty good too, should do 100+bu again for them in many fields. Im guessing the winter wheat on our ground will have field averages from 55-75bu this year.

NIF, in reference to the shot looking down into Peck, the kids buy most of the grapes from the vineyard just south of the golf course. It's a hard grow there since the sunlight is minimal and we think there is a lot of water that comes off the hill right on the east side of it that keeps the vines watered late in the season. You don't want that, but instead would like to cut off the H2O and stress the fruit into ripening. Anyway, nice pictures on that thread--sure do enjoy the landscape around there and hope to get up to your place before the chaos starts. Like everyone else the spray planes are working on this rust problem around here. I know the bluegrass is getting hit pretty good, too. One of these days the hay will get cut if there is a good window.

Today was just too beautiful of a day to not take pictures. We are working up ground for a neighbor who grows LEGAL herbs here in California. In the picture is my 17 year old son working up a plot that was planted to rosemary. He just finished a plot that was planted to basil, oregano and thyme. No wonder he had pizza for lunch. Yes, that is the Pacific Ocean and the Channel Islands in the background. There is nothing to complain about when you get to see that view fron the seat of a D4.

Had to go back a couple pages to find this thread. Wheat harvest is pretty much done here. We had 4-5 inches of rain today, so it will be a few days for what little is left. Yields ran from 30- 65 from what I heard. most from 40-50 bu. We bundled up a load to thrash on Labor day, and got them in the shed. Here is a shot of that, and my old M2 Gleaner. Even a youtube clip near the end of harvest.
