Does it have a cab or could rain or snow get into the top of the tranny? For starters it might be worth a good transmission flush and refill with grease.
My experience is with a 112 so don't know much about the 212.

Sitting out without cab-flush will be once home. Diesel oil was ok, SE was milky so changed that before starting. Ince I get drive train figured out I’ll replace lower gasket on SE and probably replacing the seal between the main and front side of SE if oil gets water in it again.

Hi, bernie.
I would advise getting those broken chains out BEFORE you try to move it again. Getting 'em out is a good bit easier than getting new ones in - - - - - and a whole LOTTTT easier than some of the other repairs that could result from them getting jammed up in there.
On the #12s, the shift mechanism was/is remote and the actual feed into the transmission was/is under the cab, largely covered from the weather.. I don't know about the 212 - only ever operated 2 of them - - - for about 1/2 an hour each over 50 years apart..
Just my 0.02.
You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

2129T Motor Grader. A couple of photos. One chain removed and the other inside the gear box. Machine rolls freely. I’m going to attempt a video.

The sprocket looks OK. I would think the roller chain would be a standard but one would have to measure it to be sure.
Our county used a model 12 for their road building and operated it with over 2 tons hung on the back of the grader to improve traction when blading ditches onto the road. I often wondered how the drive chains would take that but they did for several years.
Good luck!!

Hi, Bernie.
Good stuff. I agree with D4Jim, that sprocket does look O.K., even cherry.
Personally, and given Cat's early days habit of building things to last, I think I'd be hesitant to put anything but genuine Cat drive chain back in there lest it be of a lower quality. But that's just me.
Just my 0.02.

As Suggested earlier in this post -
Use a length of rope - tie a bowline in the rope placing it through the chain a few links from the end of the chain. Make the loop in the bowline large enough so it does not interfere with placing the master link.. Tying the loop a few links from the end should allow you to pull the chain to the moveable sprocket without interfering with the mesh of chain/sprocket.
Do the same on the other end of the chain with the same length of rope, In effect you are making a complete circle using the rope between ends of the chain.
One can use a "trucker's hitch to pull the ends together too!
I have done this with 4 roller 140 chain soaked in 85w-140 oil in a vertical position. It works and unlike wire - there are no sharp ends on wire to cut you up! If possible - try to make the connection on the sprocket, the teeth will help you keep chain tight.
I can attest to the damage a broken chain or lost bearing can do with a chain bunching up in a case -- you do not want to do that! 12V71 Detroit through a torque converter makes quick work of a case with 4 roller 140 chain coming unglued!

CTS-good info, regrets on experiencing what you know for the failure. I’m easing into this one-different machine for certain for me. You, D4Jim, and Deas have all commented extensively on these graders and have shared a bunch-much appreciated. I’ve spent some time looking over posts and getting what manuals I can find.
We’ll see where it goes, but having a few projects to use on gives a purpose for it. My 2T has been very useful to me, making it fun to work. I’ve watched grader operators over the years, what skill they have! Pre-GPS, just grade hubs, blue tops, and string lines.
Once I figure out file types for posting videos, I will. Not sure what my hang up is.
Deas, any info on the wheel lock? Does the 212 utilize that protection? You’ve mentioned in other posts in the past. I do not want to strain this machine and create self inflicted wounds.
Appreciate the comments-getting it home by years end.
Keep safe-
