That's great news, well done.

If I remember correctly, there was a thread on here a while back that discussed what size socket fitted the nut down inside the lower cannister, I think a custom made deep reach socket does the trick

Oil pump access cover gasket 4F7637
Valve cover gasket 4F7003 and 4F7002 if you remove the spacer between the head and the valve cover.
Oil capacity 5gal
This is taken from a D4 6U1 and up manual which I think would be the same.

Not sure how far apart you are wanting to go. The canister for oil filter just sits on the base has a square section o ring as the gasket. They can be used several times if not disturbed. They get very hard and after years of service will leak. Just tap canister and lift off, dig the rubber out of the grove and put new in. Don't have a number as in the old days they were included with a new filter. So I have a supply tucked away from sun and heat. I believe the top and bottom use the same rubber gasket.

The hex at the bottom of the filter base is a plug to drain the base. It should have a copper washer.

Got everything apart and waiting on gaskets and filters now. Does anyone have a source for an electric starter for this engine? It has the place for it. I contacted a number that my local cat dealer gave me for a CC Electric but he wants $600 for a starter. Kind of a high price if you ask me.

Attached is the "Capacities" page (back inside cover) for the D 315 engine, Form 10766-2.

If you dump 5 gallons of oil into a D 315 you are going to be a little over full.

Thank you for posting. What lubricant goes in the fuel injection housing and the starting engine clutch housing?

They both take "crankcase lubricating oil".

The same as you are running in the main and starting engine.

600 bucks is what those starters are worth. there not common any more so that equals expensive. you can do direct start conversions. ie mount a starter in the bell housing and start the main engine directly. and still have it pilot start for those freezing cold days or when you run out of fuel and have to bleed it etc. some of the later engines had the dimple on the bell housing to line up a drill and cut the holes others had a cover plate. there is several threads on this forum about doing so.

and dont forget with the canister filters to oil the orings or treat them with a little oring lube it helps em bed in without damage.

If you dump 5 gallons of oil into a D 315 you are going to be a little over full.

True but if you dump 1/4 qt in the ponies air cleaner, 2 qts in the diesel's air cleaner, 1.5 pints in both the fuel injection pump housing and starting engine clutch housing and 1 qt in the starting engine and 15 qts in the main then you end up with nothing left out of 5 gallons as per the D4 6U parts book. It doesn't split it up like the 315's manual.

The genuine starter from Cat is over $1000.
