It has been a long time since I've had the 22, I don't recall. There is a parts book in the members section of this site, I'll see if I still have a service or operator manual.

I no longer have anything but the parts book, but as I thought there is an adjustment nut external, near the clutch pedal pivot. I definitely recommend getting manuals for the machine.

tkgeorge99,
If you are a member of ACMOC you would have access to the Technical Library Documents in which is posted the Cat 22 Operator's Instruction Book plus a whole bunch of other reference material to use as your collection grows!!!

As BruceOz mentioned the fuel pump may not be working properly. If you are going uphill with only a couple of gallons of fuel in the main tank, the carburetor may be higher than the fuel level in the tank starving the engine. A couple of my 22s don't even have the fuel pump installed.

I'm sure that this didn't happen to you but when I got my first Cat, a 22, I thought that first gear was left and down with the gear shift. Well, that's the way old floor shift vehicles were equipped. Showing my age here.

The main clutch is adjusted under the floor plate by the clutch pedal. The main clutch brake (to stop the clutch from spinning for gear changes) is adjusted through the flywheel clutch inspection cover on the top of the bell housing in front of the gear shift lever. If you have the tractor in gear with the engine running but the clutch pedal is pushed to the floor, so to speak, when the tractor is not moving then the clutch disc is not spinning. Putting it in neutral and back into any gear should be easy, that is no grinding. If there is grinding after being in neutral then the clutch disc and pressure plate/flywheel or pilot bearing is causing the disc to start turning when in neutral. Adjustment or cleaning of the main clutch may help. Adjustment of the clutch brake may be needed. If properly adjusted, the clutch brake stops the clutch disc from turning when the clutch pedal is pushed in to change gears.

Good luck with your 22. Neat tractor! Keep posting. We are a bunch of nuts who like pictures.

Pete

Thanks everyone for your replies, advice, and help. I have the original operators manual and parts catalog. Most of it is pretty good and has some pics but the paragraph on adjusting main clutch didn't have a reference pic to help out. And a few of other pics on some other adjustments aren't super clear. Voice of experience is sometimes the best.

Yes, my cat does not have a fuel pump. It looks like it was deleted when the hydraulic pump was added. It has almost 7 gal in tank so I don't think it was a fuel supply issue..... but intuitively when it bogs down, I feel like it must be a fuel or air issue. But, engine runs super smooth and rebuilt carb seems great. So I don't know.
I will adjust clutch pedal, main clutch, get tracks squared away, new plugs and wires, follow lube instructions in book, and change gear oil. I'm hoping by doing all these things, it will improve performance. My property is very hilly and I need machine to be able to climb up and down. Climbing the hill out, it felt super stable and had plenty of traction, only issue was dropping rpms and lost power.

This is what this club is all about - a big thank you to the OP, and a huge that you to all the contributors!

Great find on the 22, we're all looking forward to seeing it at work.

As far as video goes, YouTube or Vimeo would work.
