Surprisingly it shifts and works ok until a load gets applied.the disc came from cat and is the only one listed.judging by the friction plate design/pattern it's for a wet application.the springs could be the issue.only did a short test drive with the new disc installed but the old clutch was worn out to paper thinness.

Brake springs have a coating of paint that will burn off if the springs have been hot enough to weaken them. I don't know about clutch springs. I have seen them with a dab of yellow paint on some spot. Anything like that in general use that any of you know of? This thing gets the old curiosity cranked up.

I went back and looked at the photos again. Does it appear that the clutch fingers are higher than normal at the throwout bearing? And maybe the throwout yoke is pretty far back? That clutch looks pretty well hammered. Is it a reman? Or is it ancient and just got reinstalled on a new disk? It appears that there is a grey paint in the one spring that shows, and it is rust pocked. Could it be that only half of the springs still work? Or less? Can you find a manual that shows a picture of a new, just installed clutch properly adjusted? Can an answer be gotten from a whole list of questions???

The clutch is not a reman.im guessing it's original. Installed a new disc that came from cat.as far as the finger adjustment goes I can't seem to get enough access to hold the inner screw while tightening the lock nut down.havent found a manual for it.that would definitely help.my springs could be the issue as yhe old disc was really worn down.i don't think the last clutchjob wasn't set properly either.

Could it be that the pressure plate has be resurfaced a couple times before you got to it? That would explain the fingers being pretty high against the throwout bearing, and therefore the springs not fully compressed. A normal vehicle will have the ends of the fingers down about even with the back of the clutch cover when all is in order.

It's very possible.not sure of the year of it.its had its share of work done on it that for sure.fingers are not even close to being in line with the back of the cover.was afraid of this.is there a spec for thickness?

Is there a clutch rebuilder anywhere near you? I once sent a clutch to a rebuilder and they cured what was wrong, had all of the specs and set it up correctly. Of course it was on a small rig, a V304 IHC gasser, and it was about 50 years ago, but It might be an option if you can find such a shop.
