Looking for anyone who has converted a D4 to direct start. 

I feel like I have found most of the information needed but I have a few questions. 

Who sells the correct bendix gear?
Is a 12v 42mt starter adequate?
Found a template for drilling housing, anything I’m missing? 
Any good write ups with pictures?

Welcome to the Bulletin Board. That is a very clean looking loader.
"Old Magnet" are you out there? This is right up your alley. Perhaps a few points of wisdom to share?
The biggest issue I notice is, it being a loader unit, I am guessing the engine or the loader needs to come out to do your conversion due to lack of space. Ugh!
I have seen your question posted on FB pages. Have you looked into why the pony will not run?
Hopefully somebody will chime in and get you headed in the right direction.

Juiceman, thanks for the reply.

I believe I can drill the required holes with engine in place. I plan to build a template in my shop based off of Old magnets information from web.

Pony motor has not run in many years. Magneto was full of water, gas tank is missing and oil is mostly fuel. For the cost of new magneto I can buy 42mt starter and bendix from local starter shop.

I still plan on starting from standing on the side to utilize decompression lever and prime fuel/oil systems.

I’m pretty sure I’ve got most of the theory figured out just wanting input before I proceed, haha.

Most direct start D4-D6 use 24 volt starters, at least the ones I have operated.

yes it will be costly to rebuild the pony and the mag, but it has advantages especially in cold weather and when it comes to bleeding the fuel system. yes they can be cantankerous to start. but there are advantages. try and locate a running pony or one that doesnt need rebuild.

i know of some that have both.

and 24v is always better than 12 as it has more power. other advantages include more availabilty of parts and cheaper wiring. remeber a doubling of voltage halves the current draw for the same output power.

trainzkid88, i was thinking staying 12v would keep things simpler.

Loader will be used only on my farm for a pond and some trails. I bought it for scrap price and honestly im going electric start for the simplicity. I figure i can swap the electric start into it now and always rebuild pony at a later date.

I was thinking a 12v intake heater (like cummins use), and a 120v block heater for the colder days.

Stopped into local starter/alt shop and he will have12V MT42 starter and correct 12t 220-12190R bendix tomorrow.

i suppose you could use a parallel switch to utilize your 6 volt charging system to charge two 6 volt battery and then start on 12 volts????

you can use a thermostart in the intake manifold for heat during starting.  i think the thermostart plug cost less than 20 dollars

yes 24v is better electrically but 12 is very common. and you can use the 6 volt generator to charge a pair of 6v batteries that are linked in series via a soleniod to become 12v. it would be simpler to do what i have done and turn the old generator into a layshaft to belt drive a alternator. i simply had a longer shaft made and fitted new bearings to the generator housing yes you could also skim the generator end housing shorter so you can fit a pulley to the armature shaft.
