Ok found the Goughs serial # listing:
- 5J3036 - R. Raine, Stoke
- 5U519 - F.S. Nola and Sons, Ltd. - Auckland (Kumeu)
- 5U5576 - B. Linnell, Kaiwaka
- 5U6373 - J.R. Byers, Gore
- 5U13058 - I.K. Campbell, Heriot
- 5U15604 - C.A.E. Cashmore and Sons, Ltd., Auckland
- 5U18507 - W.R. McNabb, Nelson

The one from Auckland migrated a fair distance. Let me know the serial # of your cousin's Twenty-Two and I'll look it up. I counted up the # of units that were listed specifically in Marlborough and it's a pretty decent # - 5 Two Tons, 26 Tens, 18 Fifteens, 12 2F Twenty-Twos, 14 1J Twenty-Twos, 3 4J R2s, 6 6J R2s, 5 3J D2s, 21 5J D2s, 64 5U D2s, and so it goes. At the time these listings were printed out, there were 406 Twenty-Twos imported, and 1838 D2s/R2s. Seems like a lot for a fairly small place where the import price was high.
I got this listing from John Neal who hails (hailed?) from Budge St, Blenheim I think about 20 years ago__PRESENT

Hello Neil, I got some more serial numbers from the carcasses littered around the property here in Richmond (Ralph Ching)  I mentioned earlier in the thread. One could even be your Father's old 5U!

5U14452
4U2390
5U15447
5U9960
5U18613

These are all carcasses, which are well stripped of parts.

Close Mark! He had two and one of them was 5U14913 but I don't know what the other one was - all my family could tell me was that it was a side-tank but that doesn't mean much.
For the others:
5U14452 - Raumati Carrying Co. - Wellington
4U2390 - Kempthorne Prosser fertilizer, Christchurch
5U15447 - G.E. Saxton - Nelson, to J.S. Oxenham - Havelock
5U9960 - J.W. McCall, Gore
5U18613 - Martin Williams Ltd - Kaitaia << this one has moved a fair distance

Cheers,
Neil

On Saturday, myself and a couple of other guys went way up country to a remote farm to try and get a D2 running (it was hired out by Ralph Ching over 10 years ago, then his truck broke down and he never got around to organising to get it collected!) we got the pony running but the fuel tank leaked like a sieve and we couldn't keep it running long enough to get the air bled out of the injector pump. This tractor has a serial number of 5U14756, be very interesting to know its history:

We also knew the farmer has an old 5J that was owned by his father, which we found in a paddock....obviously been sitting for a long time! Serial number on this one is 5J1700SP

Again it would be very interesting to find out the history ot this one too!

5U14756 - B.W. Woodman, Blenheim. Used to have an electric pony start but the motor is missing, as is the hood
5J1700SP - P.S. Booth, Nelson. The SP indicates special parts, most commonly a different gear ratio on 3rd and 4th. Looks complete.

Both machines have Cat 2A (angle) blade arrangements and Cat 44 hydraulic controls. The 44 on the 5J is not a common application in your area and I'd think if a can was over the exhaust, it could be worth looking closely at it. If it was anywhere near me, I think I'd be all over it. In any case if you put a glass or mug over it, followed by a plastic bucket, it'll stop any more rain getting in.
If you take the pony tank home, you can apply some POR-15 or equivalent (follow instructions to the letter and take your time) to seal up the tank. Mine was holey as well and it's as dry as a bone now.

Boy, there are lot of machines in your neck of the woods.__PRESENT

Your half way to getting it move if the pony ran and the main turning. Figure out temporary tank to get it home. Good luck to you. Very nice looking machine.

5U14756 - some other info. Anything newer than 5U13273 has the two-piece clutch shaft / longer track frames enabling the main clutch to be changed without having to split the tractor. Saves a bucket load of time when doing that job.
Have a look around to see if you can find the starter motor. I see that the main engine air cleaner is on the ground behind the tractor. Make sure that goes with it. Really should reinstall it to keep critters out. If you have occasion to clean the oil bath cleaners, do not steam clean the mesh. Instead use solvent to ease the dirt out. Edb has posted a procedure here whereby one stands the air cleaner body on a pedestal in a drum with kero or diesel or any kind of cleaning solvent like those, and use compressed air to bubble up through the mesh. The bubbles cause solvent agitation inside the mesh and dislodges the dirt, which can fall to the bottom of the drum, beneath the compressed air emitter. If that's too much, you could put it in a big ultrasound cleaner again with an oil-based solvent.

Cheers,
Neil

Yes, we knew it was a very likely runner when we went out there as it was running when it was parked in the shed 10 years ago, but the pony developed issues (no spark, which I sorted on Saturday) and he couldn't get it started again. My friends are going back there to get it running and picked up, the main interest I had in it was looking at it for a friend, as I have recently purchased my own: www.acmoc.org/bb/discussion-d72/27964-fo...-3940-original-hours

Thanks again Neil, we took the hood and air cleaner off it so we could get at the pony motor as it had issues with the mag, (which I managed to sort). The starter motor would have been long gone unfortunately as there is not battery box nor any other electrics. The main reason I wanted to look at it is for my friend, who is very interested in purchasing a D2 dozer, unfortunately, I don't think this is a good candidate for him, the tracks are absolutely worn out (to the point of cracks in the rails) the track frames have been patched/hacked around, and the idlers have been built up. Not only that, the brake pedals are almost smooth and all the levers have tons of slop in them. All in all a very high-hour machine.
