I recently got the 22 my great great grandfather purchased new in 1935. It has been sitting in a shop for the last 25 years not touched. I got it home and started to try and get it to run. I rebuilt the carb and fuel pump. The magnito had been swapped out sometime in the 60s with a bendix scintilla and had no spark. I didn't have much luck finding any parts for it, or anyone that would work on it. So I got a rebuilt wico xh184. I cant get anything more than some backfires trying to start it. I have it timed on the compression stroke on #1 and the "mag" line on the front pulley is lined up as the manual says. This is the first magnito I have messed with just wondering if I have something wrong? Thanks for any help!

Its cool to get a piece of Family History from Grandpa.

When timing a mag you have to consider if the impulse has tripped, If you think you have it right (with the plugs out) rotate #1 to just before TDC and advance slowly while watching closely,the impulse should trip very close to TDC. After it trips back the engine up about 1 inch past the mag timing mark, then slowly move forward and watch the points, they should open as the mag mark lines up. Myself I use a buzz box that lets me know when the points open. If this checks out double check the firing order. Make sure the #1 cylinder wire is at the post on the mag where the rotor is and then the rest in sequence.


If your confident timing is good and you have spark, I would use the priming cocks or plugs to add a teaspoon of fuel , if the intake has internal leaks it wont suck in a fuel charge.

So when I slowly turn it over the impulse clicks right before tdc. And when I roll the motor back the to the mag mark the mag is in the window for the #1 wire and the points are open just a little bit. Does this sound correct? I have squirted some gas in priming valve in intake also.

On some mags you set the engine at TDC on compression at #1 cylinder and rotate the mag until the impulse trips and lock it down. If the mag is bolted, and the coupler is what does the timing, the coupler is rotated until the mag trips. You want it to trip at TDC. The impulse takes care of the advance for running. Any spark before TDC will cause a kick back. With a correctly timed impulse, you can pull the engine over slowly and it will still fire off.

If it is popping back out the Intake, this tells me the wires are out of order.
Its early in the morning for me to rattle off the correct wire to cylinder sequence.
All the little Gas Cats have the same firing order 10, 15, 20, 22.
