Hey Deas,
I did not remember that the orange one still had the "porch" on it. I did not know any of the "porches" were still around.
Rome - Our "expedition leader" who rounded up the two in the leading post is no longer with us. Otherwise who knows what he might have done!
Jan

Hi, Jan M.
I suspect that this unit was not part of the original production run but maybe a year or 2 later to have the D353 engine. I also think that it had been standing for a long time going by the tree growth in and around it. me also thinks that the porch may have been a very useful feature working on the DEW line to carry people to load and unload in out of the way places.
Looking at the paint on the bottom edges of the hard nose, I would not be surprised if it also had a long range front tank fitted at some time.
I wonder if those tires might give any of our Alaskan readers a clue as to its whereabouts - if indeed it still exists. If it does still exist and permission can be obtained from whoever owns it to remove it, then would come the issues of access and logistics. It is probably in a fairly remote location - which could be a plus as there is little likelihood of any transport inspectors getting involved immediately. LOL.
It would be great to see another one saved.
Just my 0.02.
You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Hi, Folks.
Here is an extract from an article that mentions the LeTourneau Sno-Freighter and the LCC-1 and their locations as at November, 2009:
"The fates of the Tournatrain and the Sno-Buggy are uncertain. The Sno-Freighter, however, sits abandoned with at least three of its trailers outside of Fairbanks, Alaska, as does the LCC-1, with just one of its trailers."
Unquote.
The article is here:
www.hemmings.com/blog/index.php/2009/11/...oad-trains-to-shame/
The Sno-Freighter was apparently built by LeTourneau for Alaska Freight Lines for their re-supply contract on the DEW line.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Deas,
"Looking at the paint on the bottom edges of the hard nose, I would not be surprised if it also had a long range front tank fitted at some time."
I would agree the paint indicates a "bow tank" was once mounted. In fact, one could argue that a portion of it can be seen as it sits in the small trees on the extreme left of the third picture you posted. This probably was an Army or Air Force unit originally.
Mary Ann and Rebecca would have both been fitted originally with a "porch" as the oral histories that I have read discuss their use during the long early transits between Little America and Marie Byrdland. The trains would not stop to change crews. The relief driver would run forward then climb a ladder up to the porch and the relieved operator would climb down in reverse then grab a rail outside the following "wanagan" (bunkhouse on a sled) and swing himself aboard like a brakeman on the railroad.
It would be great to get this one "saved" too!

Since I am too far removed from it to be of much assistance, I am putting you in charge of locating it, helo inserting a crew with all necessary tools, spares and fuel to get it running and begin driving it out to the nearest road where a lowboy can complete the extraction and with placing fuel and supply drops along the route to make sure that the extraction crew have sufficient fuel and other necessary supplies to complete the extraction to the nearest road.
With the legalistic 'fine print' in mind, I would also suggest locating the owner(s) of the unit and obtain his/her/their permission to 'salvage' it, bring it down to the 'lower 48' and restore it to as new condition with the unit to remain in the lower 48.
Unless you can win the lottery, you may also need to locate a benefactor with long pockets or initiate a crowd funding campaign.
This tape will self-destruct in thirty seconds.
