Scott, maybe you have checked it but I think there is a gearbox that has a fill point in the floor of the cab, next to the clutch pedal. Make sure that has TO in it up to the elbow. I think it is to lube the worm gear from the drive shaft to the vertical control shaft in the knuckle buster box.

Replied by SJ on topic Seal
There is a seal assem. between the starting engine and head to seal the water passage. The one for a D4400 is 5B7780 but don,t have a book for a D3400 like the 212 has but they could be the same, not sure without a parts book as they are the same starting engine but not the same diesel.

Hi catskinner,
I checked again and you are right.....must have missed a line;)
Does show production into 1947 with 219 - up but no high end count.
Still a pretty rare low production model although there doesn't appear to be anything unique about it.

Also lots of publishing errors in various sources....some don't even acknowledge the 1U model, some claim it to be single drive instead of tandem:rolleyes:

SJ is right, 5B7780 is the seal between the pony and the diesel water jackets for a D3400 engine.

The 212 graders older than 9T308 didn't have a shear pin in the control box vertical drive shaft.:(

Your gear box in the floor will have a pipe plug direct into the box instead of an elbow and a plug like the later graders had. Should make it easier to fill, 90wt gear lube goes around that elbow S L O W L Y!

The Operation and Maintenance instructions book I have lists your grader and is a Form FE034351-01.

The steering box adjustment is mainly done by taking the top adjusting nut off and removing shims beneath the two half nuts and then replacing. I believe this would lower the "rack" or driven gear sector so it's tapered teeth fit tighter into the worm. Be very careful after you adjust it so you don't over tighten it and put the box in a bind. The other thing to check is that the worm shaft does't have any slack in the bearings. Shake the input shaft from the steering wheel and eliminate any endplay by removing shims under the end cap.

Power steering units are not listed as an option or attachment in the parts book even on the later 9T series. I think they were all aftermarket units.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D
