Nice tractor, can't beat a nice little d2
Better take the advice of some of the seasoned collectors and build a large shed. You never know you just might get a bigger tractor!

Well I finally got my D2 home yesterday, big thanks to Mog5858. Martin your trailer winch set up was perfect to get it loaded and unloaded. Spent today pulling off panels and finding out what I got myself into.
The main clutch is stuck, easy to see why. The compartment is full of water.....as you can see from the picture.
Any helpful ideas to free it up would be greatly appreciated.
Also the lever that engages the pinion on the pony motor is stuck as well - haven't looked into that yet, I am sure some one has an idea of why.

Found that the equalizer spring is broken in two spots on the bottom leaf - how hard is it to find one of these.
It has a number of track pads that are loose, so I will have to find some track bolts and nuts to get the pads all tight.

Got the gasoline tank off - wow was it plugged up with crap - there is no way that I would have ever gotten it started.

I will keep posting as I continue to get this tractor running.

Cheers
Nathan

Congratulations Nathan, now the fun begins. Your tractor sounds like mine was when it was dropped off here. Clutch compartment full of water, tanks plugged, all controls and shafts seized.
The rear main on mine was seized so I ground it undersize on the rear four mains and built the front main back up to std as that's the only bearing size available from Cat. Basically spent a lot of time disassembling, shining parts up on the wire wheel, and that got 90% of the components back working how they should do. The rest were replaced, and I did basically all of the bearings and seals from the fan back through to the bevel gear pinion. Have not done the finals as they're stuck but that's next on the list after I get the main running, which is imminent. The pony is in the shop getting thrust washers installed on the crank.
You can take your leaf spring to a truck spring shop and they'll make you a brand new one. You can either replace just that leaf or, if you take the whole pack in, they can make you a new pack. The benefit of that is that you can assess how high your current pack sits, and then tell the shop to make the new pack an inch higher, or half an inch lower, or whatever you need..

Cheers,
Neil

I don't know if you have track type experience or not, but just in case:

The rule I was told with track pads is, any time they have been removed, always clean the back of the pad and the rail where they mate to clean, shiny metal.

Simply putting in new bolts and tightening them won't work. They'll come loose again, usually pretty quickly. Any paint, rust, corrosion or dirt in there needs to be completely cleaned out to allow a tight, interference free mating surface between the pad and the rail. You don't have to take the rust or paint off the whole back of the pad, of course. Just the part that will touch the rail.

When you're working on those loose pads, make sure to remove them and clean the mating surface up completely. Using genuine Caterpillar bolts and nuts, with plenty of anti-seize, will pay off in the end, too. They're generally cheaper than the same grade from another supplier, their heads are usually a little taller, meaning they'll stand up to abrasion and still be removable for you or the next guy. They also generally are just the right length to avoid protruding threads which will corrode and prevent removal down the road.

Pete.

Garlic Pete - thanks for the reminder. I have had my share of busting undercarriage and replacing it when I was a technician at the local Cat dealer, and when I worked road construction. Very important indeed to make sure the matting surfaces are polished up nice to prevent pads coming loose. Learned that one the hard way.

Machias Cat - thanks for the link very helpful info.

mog5858 - also thanks for the link, all great information.

Thanks guys!!

That is a very nice tractor. When you get everything working, you will not be able to imagine how life was without her.

I have a wonderful sales brochure for the D-2 that I wanted you to see. I scanned it in and made Pete upload it. I hope it isn’t too annoying.

There is not an easy way to enter the brochure. (It was given to Pete by Mr. Pomeroy and I told Mr. Pomeroy that I would try to share them with everyone who might be interested.)

Good luck with your first tractor and may there be many more.
