Put a straight edge over the commutator bars and hold it up to the light.
If you can see light between it needs to be turned.

Ok. Will do OM. Is there a tool for bushing removal? . My kit came today and havent measured yet but think these might be the correct bushings in the kit. The gear end housing looks like I might be able to press that one out but the brush cap looks like it might require a tool.

When and if I get this starter back together can I apply some dc voltage to hear it run while off the pony. Maybe jumper cables.

Yes, I would certainly do that.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

Guys, what exactly is the procedure for putting jumper cables to the starter. I remember when it was mounted on the pony the solenoid had three wire going to it. The bigger + lead and two smaller wires. One of the smaller wires was piggybacked with the big lead. So do I need to just wire in my starter switch panel?. Though one of my wires went over to the magneto. Dont know if it was just a grounding point there or not. I guess Im asking how to remote run this starter without burning something up?

Hi ,the solenoid grounds thru the body, the smaller terminal gets a feed from the starter button which is your wire from the bigger battery cable and makes the circuit live when you press the button , so I would put the motor in a vise or hold it down so if it jumps a bit when you run it it won't fall off the bench !!!, get jump leads - to the body +to the big solenoid terminal then a short jumper wire and power up the small terminal motor should run if not put the + lead direct to the terminal on the starter.... The other wire to the mag is grounded thru the bracket when you turn the switch to off
hope that helps

Thanks Cheshire Cat. So the smaller wire is connected with the big lead just to take power thru the starter switch button and back to the solenoid? So the solenoid is a switch to throw the full power of the + lead to the starter? Trying to get a full understanding. Is it kinda like the old ford car/truck solenoids that were mounted on the fenders back in the day. Just take a screwdriver and jump the current.

Yes that's it ......just like the old cars before they had the solenoid mounted on starter that also engages the gear in the ring gear..
