Any reasons not to go to electric start and remove the pony?

Seems there was a video posted a while back if your brave enough to try the search function.

ag-mike,
Some, not all had the RH starter mount feature. I think it would have been spotted if there was one.

Great suggestions by Steve re: propane and by Paul re: a diesel pony conversion.

If you do go with electric start, you could use a propane start assist instead of either.

Sad to hear of your troubles - and of the causes behind them.

Best of luck!

I have never found that propane was useful as a start aid. I have used it in conjunction with a little ether to run a diesel that was very hard to bleed the air out of the fuel system. But as a stand alone starting aid.....no.

Maybe I have been missing something!

I'd give a thought or two to the idea of a diesel pony motor. Any good machine shop could put two bearings where the pony motor used to be, and from there run a tumbling bar to a little Lister or something easy to start on 12V. Keep the flywheel with clutch, starter drive and pinion, etc. I'd do it myself if I was there just because it sounds interesting! Oh, one other thing: I'd shave about 30# off that flywheel for this ap.

Great comments and suggestions so far. My first thought was to look for a diesel pony motor - but my searches haven't yielded much. I will work on getting photos up, I tried from my computer but I gather you have to have them on another site and link to them.

I saw a few pictures of an electric starter on the starboard side of a D13000 but with the transmission setup I would have to make some serious modifications to make that setup work. The most practical way would be to utilize the existing pony motor pinion site on the port side.

The previous owner did pass on a blessing yesterday - the original Operator's Instructions book. Two copies actually, from 1939. Along with the original Twin Disc literature.

Thank you all for your help. ACMOC membership has already become a great benefit, thanks to you guys!

Carlyle III at he Vancouver BC fish docks in the early 1930's...

This is what she looked like out of the water a couple of years go. She makes about 8 knots, is deep and heavy. They don't build boats this way anymore!

Your links ask me to sign in to google. I expect if I could complete the process, I still would not be you, and unable to see the pictures.

The process of posting pictures is that you upload them to your box on this site and then select the ones you want to attach to any post you make. This allows you to conveniently repost pictures you have already used previously. This used to be difficult to do. You can upload pictures when you first submit a post or when editing later.

I have found that I can upload the pictures from my smart phone/tablet, but then cannot drag and drop them to select the ones to attach to the post, so I have to go to a laptop or desktop computer to select the ones I want. If you have them already on a computer hard drive the process is simplified.

Thanks. I am starting to have a little success now with the pictures. Now I just have to figure out where the pictures are of the pony motor side of the engine...

How about you convert to propane, pipe the air intake for the pony to outside the engine room and install a venture style mixer, the throttle on the original carb will still work as normal. Not sure how the coast guard rules come into play, propane like gasoline vapor is heavier that air, not good in the bottom of the boat.
a 20 pound propane bottle will run a pony for a long time.

I'm leery of propane aboard any boat. With the amount of vibration and punishment the ocean hands out, fuel lines sometimes fail, and with propane that could be catastrophic. The other consideration is the availability of fuel. There aren't very many places to get fuel along the coast between here and southeast Alaska, and many of the fuel docks no longer carry gasoline. Diesel is widely available and safe to transport. I will keep a 5 gallon bottle of propane in a vented compartment outside for the crab cooker...
