Well it certainly is wide gauge and that makes sense. I have a couple of D2s that are wide gauge and dont have the W but who knows what Cat was doing. Thanks, Grant.

They started using the prefix for that purpose, so you had the 3J and 4U D2s (narrow), and 5J and 5U (wide), same story for the D4, D6. I don't know if there were different gauges for the 7, 8, and 9 but then they used the prefix for standard / powershift on some of those series e.g. 36A (stick) and 46A (ps) for the D8 etc.

Cheers,

Looking at it, this is NOT a wide gauge. If I remember correctly there would be the W after the serial number to designate the wide gauge in the RD6. I stand to be corrected. Never messed much with the RD’s

Don, I just saw that beauty a few days ago. Even as yard art she’d be awesome. I’m spinning my wheels and might have an idea to save her from the torch. There is something else I’m working on and will post about it once it’s complete. I have really missed the old cats since I got out of them to get into wood milling. If I can swing a deal with the rd6 I’ll let u know and maybe I can get some basic info out of u on the diesels. I doubt I’d have time to get her going with all my other hobbies but it sure would look cool to have in the yard.

Thanks
Karl
