Your 5U did not come with a factory direct starter. Check the sticky at the top of the first forum page for tons of information on direct start conversions. I'm sure the starter you need will be listed there.

That's not correct, direct electric start became available at s/n 5U14695. Uses the early 40MT with inertia drive.
Unique to the D2 and if you go to the later conversion type starter you need to slightly offset grind the flywheel housing hole due to the conversion drive gear diameter being slightly larger.

I did not know that OM. It was available the last 4 years then. It probably was not sold often with that option here in the north country. Did it have glow plugs also? Thanks for setting me straight.

Old Magnet Sir: would 5U16971 already have a hole bored in it for an electric starter? My latest D2 has a rope start pony. I’d like to have the best of both worlds with DE and pony if it would work. Thanks! JM

Believe it should. Look for a cover plate under the pinion control. To use an original hole you will need an original starter or alter the hole to fit a later starter.

OM---any idea on the 4U series? I do have the plate and hole on the housing so does that mean an original 40mt starter would fit right in?
