so Ray--have you tried to file a small claims action in that state against him?? Usually it can be done online---if not try to utilize a collection agency
That is if he can positively ID the scammer. No positive ID how you gonna do a small claims action? Guy could have been using a false name and fake ID. Same with a collection agency. They don't like getting sued.
Hope he can get it worked out but I wouldn't hold my breath.
Rick

I did some digging via the internet and cannot find anyone by that name in Utah, New Mexico, Nevada, or California. I suspect he was using a fake driver's license and fake name. If I cannot find out his real name and location I cannot file any claim. The phone he was using came from the Reno area, but that was probably a burner phone as it went off-line a few days later. Ray

Perhaps you should send a letter to each attorney general in those states giving them all the info you have, they may be able to cross-reference to other fraud cases reported?

This kind of thing really sets me off. There is so much opportunity for people to get what they need, but some would rather do it the wrong way. Unreal.

Never pay with gift cards either. Just had a similar deal on a dump trailer. Price was too good to be true. They said they were going through Ebay Motors and require payment in Ebay gift cards. All kinds of alarms and whistles went off in my head. Called Ebay and they said they DO NOT ever require payment in gift cards. Turned all information over to them. They also used an Air Force Base address for me to mail them. Called base security and turned info over to them also. This world is going to hell with get rich quick scam artists!!

A few years back there was a anecdote published ?somewhere about a lady wanting to sell a horse. The buyer immediately wanted to close the deal and sent a cashiers check for more than enough money to cover the purchase price, plus cost of shipping, plus extra to make sure everything was covered. The remainder was to be returned to the buyer via Western Union or what ever wiring service was avail.
The lady smelled a rat and led this guy on while documenting the whole multi-week scenario. It was quite humorous but the lesson was: 1)Cashiers checks may be fake and you may not know that until after you have wired back the money. 2)There is no way to wire $ and know for sure where and who picks it up. It can be picked up at any office by presenting the trace number.
Another scam in which a JD tractor seller tried to involve me as buyer tried to insure me that everything was legit even though it was not an Ebay sale the trans would be insured by them. Knowing this deal was too good in the first place and the Ebay assurance thing was fake I led him and that tractor on through CA and multiple reasons why it was being sold because the alleged seller could not remember one lie to the next.
So,, the lesson is only wire money to someone you personally know and only give the trace number out to that person. Also Ebay is not involved in any way with non Ebay sales.

I have a ad in the ACMOC Magazine looking for a belly pan for a late model D2. A guy calls me and says he is from the New Jersey area and has one in good condition. He says that he can ship it and will call me back with a price. He calls me back and says he has a hell of a deal for shipping by a local trucking company. He said the truck would be leaving soon and I would have to get him the money quickly. He told me to wire him the money by Western Union to I think was a local Walgreens in his area. I asked for a picture of the belly pan, he said he only has a flip phone and could not take pictures. I asked him if he had a friend or grand kid who could take a picture. He said he had nobody who could send me a picture. I never sent him any money he hung up on me. It sounds like he is really working us guys looking for parts telling us what we want to hear.

And that there is the prime reason these scammers are able to play us, in my opinion.
If it's too good to be true, it is. Listen to your skeptical voice. Never wire money. Never hurry a transaction. Anything legit can take its time and allow both parties to get their ducks in a row.
Be careful out there.
