Yes, the drive gear is the same, but uses an adapter bushing for the later mags.

That is pretty much what the company told me. They are sending me a gear for a tapered shaft with an adapter for the Prestolite straight shaft. Had I realized there was an adapter available I probably could have used it on of the gears off of an Eismann that I have. Another interesting side note, I was looking through some parts from my other bad habit (aviation) and found some mag gaskets for a 6 cylinder aircraft engine and they are the same as the Caterpillar mounting gasket. Grant.

The Eisemann gear will fit with the adapter. Those mag mount gaskets are some kind of standard, even fit hyd pumps on some tractors.

It is interesting that the Chicago Mag which looks almost identical to the Prestolite had a different gear. The company told me that Chicago Magneto bought out the Prestolite group and made their own gear which is slightly different. When the new gear and adapter arrives I will see if the adapter would actually work using one of the Eismann gears. This thread might save someone some cost and frustration in the future. Grant.

Ok, that is interesting if the gear is different. Please do let us know. Wonder why a gear made special to fit their mag would need an adapter?

Adapter and gear arrived. I pulled a gear from an Eisemann and yes, they are the same. I could have saved $65 by not buying the gear, but I didnt know. OH WELL it doesnt hurt to have a new gear. The adapter will solve my issue and get the rebuilt Prestolite going. It looks like I will have to make a timing mark on the new gear. I will have to figure out if it is the same spot as the Eisemann or different. Just another adventure in Old Yellow Iron. Grant.

Yes, it seems to be in the same spot. I marked it with white paint rather than the black paint that was on the original mag. Black was hell to see on a bright day. This should be better. I will try to get it on tomorrow. Grant.
