Replied by Lance Jones on topic R2 heads
Hi Team , the R2 Engine has a Number of Parts common to the J Series D2, Head is definitely Different and is Not same as 22. Liners are same basically but have Chamfer at top to reduce Compression . there seems to be several different Intake manifolds , ,some would be for Kerosene

Replied by Burcat15 on topic which R2?
an R2 5E would be the same as a Cat 22 head,
The R2 4J/ 6J is similar to the D2 5J.

Any pictures of the machine?.

Replied by Lance Jones on topic R2 Head
For some reason My Post [#13 ] was only Part Posted , rest must be in cyber Space ! There is very little in R2 head same as D2 , That includes Valves, even Rocker Arms are different Length and Tappet cover and Gasket are Different . Head Gasket is same as D2 and Available from Cat . as I Bought one last Week . Tappet gasket if You need one You will have to Make Your own or Get it from Olson's .
I have a Spare bare head here , but cost to You Would be Prohibitive. Good luck with Repair LJ

The R2 5E is 4" bore x 5" stroke same as 22
R2 4J/6J is 3-3/4" bore x 5" stroke similar to the D2
They only made 82 5E's so it is not likely the OP has one of those but we don't know for sure.

I have two older (1931 OR 1932) CAT (gas) engines out in the field that supposedly fit the CAT 22. They may fit other tractors (see current discussion topic "15 combine engine" at top of todays list) or combines or stationary usages. They came out of JD 31A combines (which used CAT engines) so they have the fan drive shafts over the top for rear mounted radiators. Supposedly these were a common engine. Anyway, some parts are missing or broken but luckily at least one of each part (carb, mag, manifolds etc.) is there and looks serviceable to the point that one good complete eng. with extras would be supplied. Both radiators are very nice. I do not know if either eng. is free. Neither eng. has been open to the weather. Seems to me I've seen some original ring sets (still in orig. boxes) in my parts piles but I don't know how many, I'd need to dig for those and would need parts numbers. Judging from your thread I am looking for head part #6J237SP. Where might I look for this # on the head itself?

You say they only made 82 of these engines. How can I determine if my engines are of the 82? Mine came out of 31A JD harvesters but they are CAT. I have the original JD manuals and they carefully avoid any mention of their being CAT engines. I have the radiators and they look like other CAT radiators I have but they have no CAT markings. This was I suspect, due to John Deere's hiding of the CAT name in their products.

A twenty two head will not fit on an R2 block, and that was my tractor serial number not a part number
